1x 4 oz. skein Brown Sheep Company Lamb's Pride Bulky yarn
Size 10 1/2 straight needles
10 1/2 dp needles
size G crochet hook to make hanger
tapestry needle
2 stitch markers
stitch holder

Gauge:
Working in stockinette stitch of k 1 row, p 1 row:  3 sts and 5 rows = 1".

Size:
Approximately 17" from cuff to tip of mitten.

Pattern:
Cuff
Using size 10 1/2 straight needles, cast on 48 sts and work in 1 x 1 ribbing for 3", ending wrong side.
Next row (right side) change to stockinette stitch and work until 1 1/2" above ribbing, ending wrong side.

Thumb Gusset
Next row (right side), work across first 20 sts, place marker on needle, inc 1 st in next st, k 2, inc 1 st in next st, place marker on needle and complete row.

Purl next row and continue in stockinette stitch, increasing 1 st after 1st marker and 1 st before 2nd marker on each knit row until there are 14 sts between markers, ending wrong side.

Next row (right side) work across first 20 sts, place next 14 sts between markers on holder, cast on 4 sts and work across the remaining 24 sts.  48 sts on needle.

Continue in stockinette stitch until piece measures 7" above cast on thumb sts, ending wrong side.

Tip of Mitten
On next row (right side), decrease in following manner:  Row 1:  k 5 *k 2 tog, k 6*,
repeat from * to * across ending k 1.  Row 2:  purl.  Repeat these 2 rows, working 1 less stitch between decreases on each knit row until you end by knitting 2 tog across.  Break off yarn
and thread end through remaining sts and secure.

Thumb
Using size 10 1/2 dp needles, pick up and knit the 14 thumb sts from holder, 1 st at corner, 4 sts over cast on sts and 1 st at opposite corner.  Divide these 20 sts onto 3 needles, join and
work in rounds of knitting until thumb measures 2 1/2".

Knit 2 tog around, break off yarn and thread end through remaining sts and secure.  Pull all yarn ends through to wrong side and weave into work, stitching down with sewing thread to secure.  Using the crochet hook, chain a hanger for the mitten at top edge of ribbing.  Decorate mitten as desired.  (I made a Christmas tree using a duplicate stitch with beads for decorations and cut out
felt boxes and tied with embroidery floss for under the tree.)
