Here is a pattern for socks with a seam on the side. Both are knit at
the same time.
Note about knitting two items together: never put your knitting aside
when you are in the middle, e.g. one sock is on one needle, and the second
- on another. You'll not know which side to continue and may end up with
two rows more on one side than on another.
Use needles suitable to your yarn. I cast on 40 sts. for thicker socks using 4mm needles, or 60 sts for finer yarn on 3 mm needles.
Numbers for 60 sts. cast on are in parenthesis.
When you knit the right row, first sock (on the right of the needle)
is THE LEFT one, when the second (on the left side) is the RIGHT one.
I'll refer to them as 1st and 2nd, when on the right side the LEFT
is 1st, and on the wrong side the RIGHT is 1st.
Cast on 40(60) sts. Take another skein of yarn and cast on more 40(60)
sts.
Good idea for entertaining socks is to take two skeins of contrast
colors and switch them from time to time. This way you get "invert"
socks.
Work each part from it's skein, ribbing or what you like, until you are ready to start the heel.
Knit 1st sock up to end, and 20 (30) sts from the second one.
Turn.
Purl all sts from this sock and 20 (30) sts from the second one.
Continue working on these sts. for 18 (28) more rows.
Heel, 1st sock:
Knit 12 (19) sts., K2 tog, turn.
Purl 5 (9) sts., P2 tog.,
Knit 5 (9) sts., K2 tog.
Repeat last two rows, until you have 6 (10) sts on the needle.
K6 (10), pick up 10 (15) sts on the left side and knit them.
Heel, 2nd sock:
The same as for the 1st sock.
After picking up sts on the side and knitting them, place marker and
continue knitting up to the end of the row. Turn. Purl across. Pick up
10 (15) sts on the edge and purl them.
Purl all sts of the second sock, then pick up 10 (15) sts on the edge
and purl them.
Place marker and purl to the end of the row.
You have twice 46 (70) sts on the needle.
Work two more rows in st. st.
Next row: 1st sock: K to marker, K2tog (first two sts after marker),
K to last two sts., K2tog.
2nd sock: K2tog, K to last two sts before marker, K2tog., K to the end
of the row.
Next row: purl.
Repeat last two rows twice (4 times) more, until 40 (60) sts for each sock remains.
Continue plain knitting until the sock measures up to beginning of fingers.
Next row: *K1 (2), K2tog, K14 (24), slip, K1, PSSO, K1 (2)*, place
marker, repeat from * to *.
Repeat the same on the second sock.
Purl next row.
Next row: *K1 (2), K2tog., K to last 3 (4) sts before marker, slip,
K1, PSSO, K1 (2)*; repeat from * to *.
Purl next row.
Repeat until you have 16 (20)sts on the needle for each sock.
Graft the toes.
Steam the pieces and sew the side seams.
