Finished Socks

Size:
Men's medium (10.5 inches or 26.66 cm long)

Abbreviations:
SSK - Slip, slip knit. Slip the next two stitches knitwise, then knit these two stitches together through the back loops

M1L - Make one left - with left needle tip, lift the strand between the last knitted stitch and the first stitch on the needle, from front to back. Knit the lifted loop through the back.

M1R - Make one right - with left needle tip, lift the strand between the last knitted stitch and the first stitch on the needle, from back to front. Knit the lifted loop through the front.

Materials:
2 balls Fixation/Obsession, color of your choice
Needles: US 3 (3.25mm) or size needed to obtain gauge (I used the 2 circ method, but it can be worked on dpns as well)

Gauge:
2x2 Rib: 7st = 1"
Leg pattern: 1 repeat = 1  "

I used two patterns (Knotted Rib, and Broad Spiral Rib) from Barbara Walker's 1st Treasury, reworked to be knitted in the round.

Knotted Rib:
Multiple of 3 sts.
Row 1 (RS): *P2, knit into front and back of next st; rep from *

Row 2: K2, *P2, k2tog; rep from *

Repeat Rows 1-2.

Broad Spiral Rib:
Multiple of 6 sts.
Rows 1 and 3: *P2, k4; rep from *.

Row 2: *P2, (k2tog but don't sl from needle; insert rh needle bet. 2 sts just knitted tog, and knit the 1st st again; then sl both sts from needle tog) twice; rep from *

Row 4: *P2, k1, k2tog and knit 1st st again, as before; k1; rep from *

Repeat Rows 1-4.

Cuff
Cast on 48 stitches and work P2, K2 rib for 12 rounds (or desired length)
On the next round work as follows: *P2, K2 tog, P2, M1R, K2, M1L; repeat 6x.

Leg Pattern
R1: *P2, K into front and back of next st, P2, K4; repeat 6x.

R2: *P2, K2 tog, P2, (K2 tog, insert rh needle between 2 sts just knitted together and K the 1st st again) twice; repeat 6x

R3: Repeat R1.

R4: *P2, K2 tog, P2, K1, K2 tog and knit 1st st again (as before), K1; repeat 6x.

Work until desired length (6", 12 pattern repeats). Keep in mind that the sock will be about ½" shorter when worn than while on the needles.

End with the following row: *P2, K1, P2, K4; repeat 6x.

Heel
(I used a short row heel worked on half of the total number of stitches, but a heel flap heel could be substituted.)

Since I used the 2 circ method, I worked the heel on the first circular needle while the instep stitches remained on the second.  If worked on dpns, the heel would be worked on half of the stitches with the beginning of the round at the center of the heel (needles 1 and 4, if worked on 5 needles)

Decrease:
Row 1: K26, wrap the last stitch (bring the yarn to the front, slip the stitch purlwise to the rh needle, bring the yarn to the back of the work and slip the stitch back to the lh needle) turn
.
Row 2: P25, wrapping the last stitch.

Row 3: K24, wrapping the next stitch.

Row 4: P23, wrapping the next stitch.

Repeat the last two rows, working one less stitch before each wrap, until there are (from l to r) 9 wrapped stitches, 9 unwrapped stitches, and 9 wrapped stitches.

Increase:
Row 1: K9, and then knit the next stitch and the wrap through the back loop, wrap the next stitch (this stitch will now have two wraps).

Row 2: P10, purl the next stitch together with its wrap, and then wrap the next stitch.

Row 3: K11, K the next stitch and both wraps together tbl; wrap next st.

Row 4: P 12, P the next stitch and both wraps together; wrap next st.

Repeat the last two rows, working one more stitch between working each wrap/stitch, until all the stitches have been worked. Knit around, picking up a stitch at each side of the heel and knitting it together with the next stitch on the following round. (54sts).

Foot
(I chose to knit the foot in st st, but you may continue the pattern down the instep stitches if you so desire, but you would have to take this into consideration when knitting around after the heel has been completed.)

Work to 1" less than desired length.  (The foot seems to stretch more lengthwise when being worn, so it can be made slightly shorter than the actual length of the foot.)

Toe
(I prefer to use the rounded toe, but any toe could be substituted, as long as the length of the toe is adjusted for in the foot length)

R1:* K1, SSK, K to 3 sts from end, K2 tog, K1; repeat once more.
R2: Knit.

Work these two rounds until 34 sts remain, then rep round 1 until 14 stitches remain.
Kitchener toe together.

Weave in all ends and knit the second sock!
