Rustic Arrow Socks

Designed by Judy Sumner

aterials: One ball of sport weight Wool Ease

Size 3 (I highly recommend sets of five needles as you then have two needles
with the top or instep of the foot and two needles holding the stitches for
the bottom of the sock.)

Gauge: 6 sts = 1"

Cast on 48 sts (12 on each needle). Join being careful not to twist.

Work 1-1/2 of k2, p2 ribbing.

Begin Pattern:

Row 1 and every odd row: Knit around.
Row 2: *(K4, P3, K5) Repeat from * around.
Row 4: *(K3, P5, K4) Repeat from * around.
Row 6: *(K2, P3, K1, P3, K3) Repeat from * around.
Row 8: *(K1, P3, K3, P3, K2) Repeat from * around.
Row 10: *(P3, K5, P3, K1) Repeat from * around.
Row 12: Knit around

Work pattern three times. Knit to end of needle one and turn work for heel
flap.

Heel Flap: Sl 1, then purl remaining sts across needles 1 and 4. Place all
stitches on one needle for heel flap.
Row 2: (Sl 1, K1) across needle
Repeat the last two rows, completing 21 rows, ending with a purl row and
right side facing you.

Row 2: Sl 1, P 5, P 2 tog, P 1, Turn.
Row 3: Sl 1, K 6, SKP, K 1, Turn.
Row 4: Sl 1, P 7, P 2 tog, P 1, turn
Continue in this manner, working one more stitch before decrease on each row
until 14 sts. remain.
Knit across and begin gussets.

Gussets:
Pick up 10 sts along the side of the heel flap, M 1 in loop between heel
flap and instep needle, work pattern across two instep needles, M 1 in loop
between instep needle and heel flap, pick up 12 sts. along other side of heel
flap. Divide heel sts between needles 1 and 4. Work 1 row around, knitting
M 1 st with the last st. on first side of the gusset and and first stitch on
second side of the gusset. Maintain pattern on instep needles.
Decrease Round: Knit to 3 sts from end of first needles, SKP, K1. Work
pattern on instep sts.
K1, K2 tog, knit remaining sts. on fourth needle.
Work one round with no decrease, always maintaining pattern on instep.
Repeat these two rounds until heel needles (1 & 4) have 12 sts. on each
needle.

Foot: Work around as established until foot length is 1-1/2" less than
desired length from back of heel.
