Materials:
Worsted wt yarn, white and red
Green tinsel yarn or fingering wt green
US size 8 16" circular needles
Crochet hook size B or size appropriate for green yarn
1 each ½" red pom pom
Gauge:
5 st = 1" st st
Size given for 6 Mo. (1 yr, 2 yrs)
Pattern:
With white cast on 72 (80,88) sts. Place marker and join being careful
not to twist stitches. Work in K1, P1 ribbing for 2 (2 ½, 3").
Change to red and work in st st for 4 ½" (5", 5 ½")
Begin tapering top of hat as follows:
Next row * K6, K2 tog.* repeat between *'s around.
Knit even for 1"
Next row: * K5, K2 tog.* repeat between *'s around.
Knit even for 1"
Next row: * K4, K2 tog.* repeat between *'s around.
Knit even for 1 "
Next row: * K3, K2 tog* repeat between *'s around.
Knit even for 1"
Next row: *K2, K2 tog * rep between *'s around.
Knit even for 1"
Next row: * K1, K2 tog* rep between *'s around.
Knit even for 1"
Next row: * K2 tog* rep between *'s around.
K one more row.
Weave yarn through remaining sts and end off.
Make a 2 ½" (or so) pom pom with white yarn and sew to top.
Holly:
With green yarn and size appropriate crochet hook Ch 10, sl st on 2nd
ch from hook.
Sc in next ch, Hdc in next, ch 2, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, Hdc in next ch, sc in next ch, Hdc in next ch, ch 2, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, Hdc in next ch, sc in next ch, Hdc in last, sc 2, sl st in 2nd ch from hook (tip of leaf), Hdc in same st as last Hdc, going down other side of chain, sc in next ch, Hdc in next ch, ch 2, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, Hdc in next ch, sc in next st, Hdc in next st, ch 2, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, Hdc in next st, sc in next st, sl st in last st (base) End off.
Tack holly and little red pom pom on white turned up ribbing. Check washability of tinsel yarn and pom pom to match that of main hat. You may want to safety pin them on to be more easily removed for washing.
Optional tie: With white on side of hat pick up and knit 4 sts on the INSIDE where the white meets the red. (hold the hat with the white ribbing closest to you and the point of the hat away from you) Work these sts in garter st (k every row) for 18" or desired length for tie. Repeat on other side.
