Facecloth and Soap on a Rope Bag
Materials:
1 skein worsted weight cotton (I use Bernat's) in colour of your choice...
(I prefer the variagates for this *smile*)
2 dpns 5 mm (US 8 I think?)
Make the dishcloth using the pattern on
the back of the label but
only go up
to 40 stitches (more if you want to use a contrast or other cotton
for the I
cord hanger for the bag).
SOAP BAG:
Cable cast on 12 stitches. (Make a slip
knot 1 or 2 inches from the end of
the yarn, put it on the needle. Knit into this and instead of dropping the
stitch off, add the made stitch on to the left hand needle)
Increase one stitch into each stitch across
by knitting into the back loop.
(24 sts).
The bag is worked in double knit style
to create a seamless bag.
Alternatively, work around with a set of 4 or 5 dpns (your choice...)
Purl 1, slip 1 across, turn and repeat.
This puts the purl bumps on the outside
of the bag for scrubby purposes...
if you prefer the stockinette side just flip the bag when done.
Again...
your choice.
Work 18 rows of bumps *smile*
EYELET ROW:
Being careful not to pick up the stitch
in between knit 2 together... I knit the two dropping the stitch that would
normally be slipped...then catch it
and put it back on the needle...not as scarey as it sounds as the cotton usually
holds quite nicely.
Slip 2 stiches (the one that was between the two just knitted together and the next slipped stitch)
Work this across, turn and back across the other side, this time you will only have 1 stitch to slip and none in between to drop and catch again. (12 stitches)
NEXT ROW:
Now you will be increasing into each stitch
to get back to 24 stitches.
Being careful to slip the stitches on the *otherside* so you don't knit your
bag shut, (k1,p1)in each stitch across.
Work one row even, that is purl 2, slip 2 around.
I usually bind off the next row, but have
done one more row of increases to create a ruffled edge. This does make for
a shorter Icord hanger if you are
determined to stick to one skein.
OPTIONAL RUFFLED EDGE:
Purl 1, (k1, p1 in next stitch), repeat around the top.
Bind off.
ICORD HANGER:
Cast on 1 stitch, work k1,pl,k1. (3 sts).
Knit across, do not turn, slide your stitches
to the other end and knit again. This creates a cord. (I tug on mine a few times
good and hard to
set the stitches and get a better idea of the true length.
Work till you have no more yarn (in this skein...not in your stash lol).
Thread the Icord through the eyelets, you'll have one extra *S*...
tie an overhand knot (only one cross that can be loosened at will), tie the very ends together. Slip in a bar of soap and present your gift.
