XMAS SCARF

Description and yarn size

Material:

knit on size 17 needles, circular 29" long.

Yarns:
Red: A ball of various yarns wound together (equivalent to about 5 strands of worsted weight). I used metallic, eyelash, wool, chenille, acrylic, cotton and whatever I had in reds from my stash. The ball should be at least 100 yards.

Green: wind several together and use green eyelash if you have it. The green is optional, and on some scarves, I added some glow in the dark plastic beads
from Walmart.

White: Wind about 5 strands of mixed white yarns together, preferrably using a fluffy yarn like Sunny or Viola and white eyelash. (or for economy any acrylic, 4 strands of the worsted weight)

Gauge:
Pattern Stitch: Garter Stitch, Knit every row

This Xmas Scarf is a great destasher! If you have accumulated a big stash as I have, you can probably make 20 as I just completed today! Actually this gift would be expensive if you go to buy the yarns I have used. It can be knit economically using acrylic and winding 4 or 6 strands together! It takes longer to wind the big balls of yarn than to knit one! If you have a
big bulky yarn in red or green or white, you can use just one strand. I live in Hawaii, so most of the yarns in my stash are lighter weights!

Cast on 61 stitches with red yarn.

row 1. Knit into front and back of first stitch and knit a total of 30 stitches, yarn over and place marker, k1, yarn over and knit to next to last stitch and increase by knitting into front and back of this stitch, then knit last stitch.

Row 2. Turn and repeat increase in first stitch and knit to yarn over, knit into back of yarnovers and knit to next to last stitch, increase every row. (repeat these 2 rows)

This may be clear as mud! What you are doing is forming a point at the back of the neck and also forming a point on each end of the scarf.

Knit until you run out of red yarn (should have about 6 - 8 garter ridges each side. If you run out in the middle of the row, that is ok, just slip the remaining stitches to one side of the needle.

Join green yarn and knit two rows. Continuing increases at the beginning and next to last stitch every row and at the marker every other row.

Join white yarn and knit for about 3 or 4 garter ridges, continuing all increases. Then bind off loosely, continuing the increases and yarn over about every 10 stitches to keep a loose bind off edge.

Work in your ends!

Use narrow red ribbon to tie on a round brass bell at the point in the back and both ends!

I have knit several Christmas Green scarves with white and several midnight blue. I added big halographic silver stars to the white on the blue scarves!
Just use a round hole punch and string them on one strand of your yarn.

Note: If you are very short, 55 stitches should be enough...Size depends somewhat on which yarns you join together! Whatever the size, scarves will usually fit someone on your gift list! I even made one for my 10 year old granddaughter!
