Round 1: Cast on 42
sts in mohair (A) with a long tail and work 1 round k1p1 using both main
yarn and tail. Next round: Knit around, continuing
in AB colour pattern, increasing 6 sts. (2 on each needle) Knit even for 5 rounds Knit 1 on first needle, place marker,
inc 2 sts (using above increase method), place marker, finish round. (3
sts in between markers) Repeat increase & plain rounds until there are 11 sts in between the markers. Knit 2 more rounds even. Transfer 11 sts between markers to
st holder Continue to knit around until mitten
measures 2.5" from thumb. Hand decrease: knit 2 rounds Repeat decrease round, keeping the decrease on the second needle directly above the one you did previously. knit until measurement from "thumb stump" is 3.75" then another decrease round When 36 sts are left, split stitches on the second needle between 1st and 3rd needles. Cut both yarns, leaving long tails.
Put a blunt needle on each. The colours of the stitches on the two needles,
with one extra on each Kitchener the remaining stitches, switching yarns to match the stitches as you go. This is not for the faint of heart. Copyright 2003 K.Widenmaier@s... |

notes:
I recently finished these mittens for a friend for Christmas. She wanted mittens
but I wanted to make them funky and special to suit
her personality, so they have thin zebra-like stripes that run the vertical
length of the mitten. They are also incredibly warm, hence
the name. This is my very first original pattern, and I really don't know how
to write a pattern. These are my notes that I took as I went along, and
I hope you will be able to decipher them. If anything requires clarification,
please let me know as I would love to improve it.
WARNING!
Do not attempt these mittens unless you are experienced at kitchenering. Part
of the charm of these mittens is that the stripe
continues unbroken all the way around the tip, but kitchenering with 2 colours
at once will make you cry.
I have taken a picture and will scan and send it as soon as the film is developed.
