Knitted Circular Coasters

www.artyarns.com/knitlistgift.htm

Material: Small amounts of yarn in 2 colors
1 pair needles
Stitch Holder
Extra knitting needle for 3-needle bind-off
Tapestry needle

With A, cast on 9 sts
Triangle 1
Row 1: K1inc1, k to end
Row 2: S1, k to last 2 st; turn
Row 3: K1inc1, k to last 1 st; turn
Row 4: S1, k to last 3 st; turn
Row 5: K1inc1, k to last 2 st; turn
Rep rows 4-5 in this manner, incrementing the number of stitches left on the needle, until you have used up all the stitches and have 9 sts on each of your 2 needles.

Place the first set of 9 sts on a stitch holder.

Drop A, attach B.
With B, K1inc1, k to end

Triangles 2-6
With B, using knitted cast-on method, cast on 9 sts
Row 1: K9, skp; turn
Row 2: S1, k to last 1 st; turn (1 un-knitted stitch left on needle)
Row 3: S1, k7, skp; turn
Row 4: S1, k to last 2 sts; turn (2 stitches left on needle)
Row 5: S1, K6, skp; turn

Rep rows 4-5 in this manner, increasing the number of un-knitted stitches left on the needle on one side of the triangle by 1 each time. On the other side
of the triangle, you can identify where to skp by locating the gap left between the stitches from the adjoining triangle and the stitches from the new
triangle-you will skp the stitch on one side of the gap with the stitch on the other side of the gap each time.

End with row 5, when you have used the last stitch in the final skp. You will have 10 stitches. Add the 10th stitch (at the top of the triangle) to the the stitch holder.
Change to A. K1inc1, k to end

Alternate yarn colors with each triangle-you do not need to cut the yarn, merely pass it along the top of each triangle as you are changing colors.
After the 6th triangle is complete, leaving about 5" of yarn, cut yarn A, and thread it on a tapestry needle.

Insert threaded needle through top 6 stitches left behind on stitch holder in order, starting with the 1st and ending with the 6th stitch. Leaving about 12" of yarn, cut yarn B. Transfer the 9 stitches from the holder onto a knitting needle.

Using the 3 needle bind-off method, with B, cast off all 9 stitches-make sure you are binding off on the wrong
side of the piece, so that all the seams are facing you. Cut yarn.
Weave in ends.

notes:
Here's a way to knit a circular coaster with a pair of straight needles or a single circular needle that I'd like to share with you. Another benefit of this method
is that you can knit in garter stitch in the round without having to purl. The same technique can be applied to any circular knitting, such as to tops of hats.
