(Spider Stitch Stole with
Picot Edging)
My sister Faith underwent chemotherapy for breast cancer this summer. I wanted to make something soft and comforting for her take to chemo treatments and to remind her that I was thinking and praying for her. I could not find a shawl/stole pattern that I liked, so I designed this one with help from "Mary Thomass Book of Knitting Patterns" and Nancie M. Wisemans "The Knitter's Book of Finishing Techniques ". The stitch pattern is a variation of the trinity stitch, chosen because the number three represents wholeness. INSTRUCTIONS: Using a picot cast on, cast on stitches divisible by 4. plus 4 edge stitches (I cast on 104 stitches) Picot Cast On (Nancie Wiseman's "The Knitters Book of Finishing Techniques") : Cast on 4 stitches using cable cast on *knit 2, bind off 1, knit 1, bind off 1, place remaining stitch purlwise on left needle. Cast on 6 stitches, repeat from* cast on two additional stitches to come up with 104. Begin Spider Stitch Pattern on next row. Spider Stitch ("Mary Thomas's Book of Knitting Patterns"): Row 1: YO, K2tog, *(P1, K1, P1) into next stitch, making 3. S1, K2tog, psso*. Repeat * to *, ending K2. Row 2: YO, K2tog, Knit. Row 3: YO, K2tog, * S1, K2tog, psso, (P1, K1, P1) into next stitch *. Repeat * to *, ending K2. Row 4: YO, K2tog, Knit. Repeat until desired length ending on row 2 or 4. Bind off using Nancie Wisemans Picot Bind Off: Cable cast on two stitches onto right needle (3 stitches ), bind off 5 stitches, repeat across. Weave in ends, wash and block to size desired and enjoy! |
