VERY WARM HAT

Very Warm Hat

This hat is made with a super bulky yarn, knit very firmly to achieve a bulky gauge. I used almost all of two skeins - the hat is heavy, but very warm. You can use this pattern with an ordinary bulky yarn such as Lopi or Brown Sheep bulky, but the results will be slightly different, and not as warm.

Size: Fits adult head up to 22 inches in circumference. If you need it slightly larger, add two stitches to the cuff (for 51) and decrease 1 stitch in the first round of stockinette.

Materials: 2 skeins Plymouth Yukon (59 yds/100g; 35% mohair, 35% wool, 30% acrylic; recommended gauge according to ballband is 2 sts/inch on size 15s)

one 16-inch circular needle, size 9 or size to get gauge. One set dpn's in same size (or close)

Gauge: I tortured this yarn into a gauge of 13 sts/4 inches (10 cm) by using a size 9 needle (to save your hands, I urge you to use an Addi turbo). Note: I tend to knit loosely; most knitters will want to try a 10.5 to get this gauge.

* * *

Cast on 49 stitches. *K1 P1* around until seed stitch cuff measures 4 inches deep.
Increase 1 stitch in next row, and work stockinette on 50 stitches for 6 more inches (total of 10 inches)

Decrease for crown as follows:

Rnd 1: *K8, K2 tog* around
Rnd 2: knit
Rnd 3: *K7 K2 tog" around
Rnd 4: knit

Continue decreasing, knitting one less stitch between decreases each decrease round (6, 5, 4) until 25 stitches remain. (Switch to dpn's when circular needle no longer holds stitches comfortably.)

Then decrease as established on each of the next 3 rows, until 10 stitches remain. Cut yarn and thread through those 10 stitches. Draw up tight.

Fold up cuff for a double layer over the ears. Remember to weave in any yarn ends on what will be the inside of the folded cuff.
