BUTTON CROCHET NECKLACE

Did you see the button crochet necklace in one of the fiber magazines, I
don't remember which one? Well, I adappted it to knitting.

I used 6 strands of a very shiny thin yarn which gave me about a DK or
worsted weight.

For handknit about #8s. For machine about T5.

I worked with the yarn from the center of the ball. On the outside thread I
strung approximately 60 buttons, mixed colors, in my case mainly blues teals
lavenders and purples. Go up in one hole and down in another. When all are
strung on the cord. Using the other end, knit six rows st.st. For machine knitters, take
the outside cord with the buttons, start wrapping the cord over a needle, with the button
about 1" below on needle approximately 20 from center. Pull stitch on needle over thread,
go to next needle and do the same all the way across to needle 20 (or thereabout) on the
opposite side. This is because you don't need the buttons to come down at
the back of the necklace. Pull forward all needles so loops are behind
latches, Knit one row with main yarn. Latch tool cast off.

For hand knitters, cast on sixty stitches. Knit six rows st.st., On seventh
row knit ten sts. Pick up outside thread and with outside thread and main
thread knit 1 stitch, make loop with button about 1" down below stitch and
with the cord the button is on, knit the stitch on the Right hand needle
(assuming you are a rightie and work from R to L. If leftie, reverse).
Continue across till ten stitches are left. Drop button cord. Knit to end.
Bind off all the way across.

In both cases, I did double button loops,. i.e. two buttons per stitch, when
it came towards center front, i.e. the middle 15 or 16 stitches.
When you have the necklace loose, decide whether you want a tie at the back
neck, or if you are going to sew a button on one end, and make a loop on the
other. If you need a tie, you can crochet a length on each end. For the
button, just make a small loop with the left over yarn
