CAPE
Material: Two balls of WoolEase
Size 5 needles--uses straight and circulars
Front section of cape: Cast on 99 sts (these st will measure 16"--this is
not too critical) K 10 rows or 5 ridges in garter stitch.
11th row: * k12, k2 tog, repeat from * ending k1
K 2 ridges (four rows)
16th row: * k11, k2 tog, repeat from * ending k1
Repeat the last 5 rows, having 1 st less between each decreasing point and 7
sts less every 5th row until there are 57 sts on needle.
K15 more rows
Cast on 1 st at the end of needle--leave sts on needle (or holder)
Repeat directions for back of cape.
Helmet:
Starting at front section of cape, *k2, p2 (on circulars), repeat from *
ending with k2, take up back section and ** p2, k2, repeat from ** ending
with p2.
Knit in K2, P2 rib for 27 rows or 3".
Then k2, p2 for 16 sts., leave 26 sts on holder for band around the face,
turn.
Knit back and forth in rows on 90 sts until there are 33 ridges (66 rows).
(Here's where we differ--the original has you bind off 28 sts, work on the
next 34 sts for 28 ridges (56 rows)--put on holder. Then bind off the other
28 stitches. You sew this together.)
Here's what I did--knit 62 sts, place a marker, k2 tog, turn. Work back on
34 sts, place a marker, k2 tog, turn. This is just like working a dutch or
square heel. You decrease on either side of the marker until you get down to
34 sts.
At this point, you start the band. Pick up one stitch in each of the 34
ridges on both sides of the helmet (if you have to pick up an extra to
prevent a gap, you can decrease one off on the next row).
Knit in k2, p2 rib on 128 sts around the face until there are 12 rounds.
Purl 2 rounds and cast off.
