CHECKER BOARD HAT
I like using up small bits of left overs and matching all sorts of colour
schemes. Also, from suggestions on this list I mastered two finger knitting by
practising with this pattern.
You need two colours of double knit weight yarn to complete this hat. Space
dyed yarn used with a plain colour has a particularly nice effect.
Cast on 96 stitches on a round 3.5 mm needle or on three needles. Work four
inches of two and two ribbing. Switch to 4 mm needle and mark the beginning of
this row.
ROW 1 - Knit two stitches in one colour and the next two in the other,
alternating for the complete row.
ROW 2 - Repeat row 1.
ROW 3 - Reverse the colours to create the checker board effect.
ROW 4. Repeat row three.
These four rows constitute the pattern. Continue these four rows for four inches.
To decrease for the crown, count the next row very carefully. You will have a
four section decrease based on 24 stitches in each section, maintaining the
checker board pattern.
At the beginning of the next row, knit two together twice using the colour
needed to carry on the checker board. Knit to stitch #20 and knit two together
twice again. You decrease four stitches in each 24 stitch section. Repeat that
4 stitch decrease three more times for the first decrease row. Knit the next
row.
Continue to decrease 16 stitches every second row maintaining the colour
switches as you go until you have 8 stitches left. Sew these in and finish off
the ends. I made larger hat last summer using 128 stitiches to begin with.
