CHUNKY BERET
Yarn:
Chunky yarn or scrap yarn, doubled, works great here and your beret can be
quite funky.
Needles: 16" circular in size to obtain gauge, another 16" circular 2 sizes
smaller and dps in the gauge size
Gauge: 3-3.5 sts/inch, if you want to take a gauge, I don't do gauges for
hats and it's no great disaster to make it at a slightly different gauge, IMO.
With smaller circulars, cast on about 60 sts and do ribbing for one inch.
Change to larger circular and increase in every other stitch to get 90 sts.
(Increase another 10 sts evenly after one plain row for big head or hair).
Knit straight for 6", striping or changing colors midrow as the spirit strikes
you.
Begin to decrease by *k10, k2tog, knit plain row, in the next row
k9,k2tog, continue decreasing in this manner every other row til around 8 or
ten stitches remain on the dps you're now using. Thread that yarn through the
stitches and weave it to the inside of the beret. No blocking on a plate for
this. You're done and the night is young enough to begin another project.
Warmest regards,
Shelby
