5 FOOT (ARRRGGGHHHH) Stocking cap.

And Here it is...the
5 FOOT (ARRRGGGHHHH) Stocking cap.
I have made 3 now and am working on the 4th so I think all bugs are
safely destroyed. And I have made them all since Janet was helping me
design the decreases..........

Materials: 12 oz of knitting worsted weight yarn. 6 of main color (mc)
and 6 of contrasting color (cc)
Gauge: 6 stitches per inch. You need a 16" circular and double pointeds
in the size to get gauge.

Cast on 84 stitches.
Work 20 rounds of ribbing.(mc) (I like K2 P2)
Change to CC and work first stripe. I did the first and third hats with
10 round stripes and the 2 and 4th with 5 round stripes. I like the 5
round stripes better. To do the 10 round stripes, just make half the
color changes but once you start decreasing one set of decreases will come
on the 6th round of the stripe.

With 10 round stripes work 14 stripes alternating colors before
decreasing. On the 5 round stripes work 28 stripes before starting the
decreases.

On the 15th/or 29th stripe....
SSK and work to the last 2 stitches, knit those two together.
(I also worked the decrease in oione stitch from each end of the round
but this makes something that appears more like a seam)
Work the rest of the 5 round stripe without decreasing. On the 10 round
stripe hat, decrease again on the 6th row of color.
Repeat this decreasing (once per stripe...or twice per stripe for the 10
round). When the stitches start to be a little stretched switch to
double pointed needles. Work till 6 stitches remain. Work the last
stripe as idiot cord. Pull the unused color up through the center.
Run the yarn through the last 4 stitches and then make a massive two
color Pom-Pon and attach to the end of the hat.

(Hint: I found the colors twisting on me, so when I untwisted I would
then twist a long way that same direction so that for quite a while the
knitting has the effect of untwisting rather than twisting the yarn.)
