HAT FOR AN ADULT

This hat is double thick around the ears, and uses no decreases for shaping
(It's based on a hat in Homespun, Handknit). It has colorwork, which adds
additional warmth. I made many and liked it best when the MC was navy, CC1
was grey, and CC2 was green. Purple/grey/navy is also a good combination.

Materials:
Yarn: Worsted weight wool or alpaca (worsted weight knits to 5 st/in (2.cm)): MC: 170
yds; CC1: 70 yds; CC2: about 7 yards (a yard is a little less
than a meter).
Needles: 16 inch circular needle, size 6 (4 mm), one circular needle any
smaller needle size; two dpns size 3 (3.25 mm);
cardboard for making pompom; waste string; Marker.

Guage: 5 st/in (5 st/cm)

With MC and waste string, invisibly cast on 96 st onto size 6 needle. Knit
one row. Join and knit circularly in stst for 4 - 4.5 inches (10 - 11 cm).
(All but a few of these rows will end up on the inside of the hat). Join
CC1 and knit in pattern A. Change to MC and knit 3-4 rows.

Weave in all ends. Transfer cast-on stitches from string to second
circular needle (careful, it's really easy to twist them here). Knit
together one st from each needle using CC2.Using MC and CC1, knit in pattern B for
6.5 - 7 inches (16 - 17.5 cm).
Transfer 48 stitches to second needle and Kirschner stitch the top
together. The hat will now be a rectangle. Bring the two top corners
together, and sew with MC.

With CC2 and dpns, make 4 inches (10 cm) of 3-st I-cord. Make a 1.5 inch
(3.75 cm) diameter pompom using all three colors. Attach to I-cord.
Attach I-cord to top of the hat.
