MAXINE'S DORM BOOTS
This pattern is adapted from one that appeared in _Vogue Knitting_ backin
the early 1980s. I didn't like having seams in the back of the leg and
along the sole of the foot, so I worked out how to do them on DPNs, and
from there, the opportunities to vary are lots of fun. The section around
the side of the foot is 13 rows and it's a great place to try out slip
stitch patterns, or other types of textures or color combinations. The
cuff could be done in some pretty lacy patterns like Old Shale or a Mock
Cable instead of ribbing. They are quick and simple. I'm also told by
mom's that they tend to stay on the baby's foot better than a lot of other
booties.
Materials: Size 10 needles, 4 oz. worsted-wt yarn for main color (MC),

Row 2: *K1, yo, K2tog* across row, ending with K1.
Row 3: P across row
K 6 rows (3 ridges)

Work 3 ridges of garter st.
Repeat 3 rows of eyelet rows:

Row 2: Repeat Row 2 above
Row 3: Repeat Row 1 above
Bind off loosely.
To finish, sew up the edge (to make toe) where the yarns were joined, and
weave in any ends at the other edge for the top.
With MC, crochet a chain of 210 sts. Lace through eyelets,
shoelace-fashion. Finish ends of chain-cords with small tassels or pompoms.
[Directions given will fit size 6-8 woman. For smaller size, make only 11
ridges of MC. For man's size, cast on 52 sts and make 15 or 17 ridges, and
crochet a chain of 250 sts for lacing. These boots are infinitely
adjustable, and they *do* stretch with wearing, especially when made fromwool.]
