NORMA'S SHRUG
10-19-95 (untested)
A "Shrug" is like a very wide scarf or shaw with cuffs for the wrists
or a short sleeve for the forearm to keep it in place. It functions
as a bedjacket but is much easier to make. Here is a pattern for one
made out of bulky yarn. Be sure to swatch first, just in case. If
you use it let me know how it turns out so I can make changes, if
necessary.
Materials: Gauge:
8-2oz, 150 yd balls of a soft wool(bulky) US# 13-5 sts, 8 rows=2"
24"-size 10 circular needle (used as a straight needle)
35"-size 13 circular needle (used as a straight needle)
Pattern:
Using smaller needles CO 34 sts. K2, P2 ribbing for 4 inches.
First increase row: K increasing 1 st in every other st across the
row for a total of 68 sts. Purl the next row.
Second increase row: increase 1 st in every other st across the row
for a total of 102 sts. Continue in stockinette until the piece
measures 5 1/2 inches. Change to larger needles and purl 1 row.
Third increase row: K 5 sts, *increase 1 st, K5, repeat from *
across the row. Purl next row.
Fourth increase row: *inc 1st in the next st, K 5 sts, repeat from
* 4 more times. Purl the next row. Continue in Stockinette stitch
until the piece measures between 52" and 60" ending with a purl row. At this point
the length is calculated by measuring from one arm at
the bump at the wrist, across the shoulders and down the other arm to
the bump, then subtracting one inch from this measurement. (Don't
worry, the decrease rows and second cuff will add five more inches)
First decrease row: *K 2 tog, K 5, repeat from * 4 more times. Purl
nextrow. Continue in stockinette stitch for one inch.
Second decrease row: K 5, *K 2 tog, K 5, repeat from * across the row
(102 sts remaining). Purl the next row. Change to smaller needles.
Third decrease row: Decrease 1 st in every other st across the row.
Purl the next row.
Fourth decrease row: Decrease 1 st in each st across the next row
(34 sts remaining). Purl next row. K2 P2 ribbing for 4 inches.
Bind off loosely.
Finishing: Sew sleeve seam together from cuff to 1-6 inches above
the cuff based on personal preference. If desired you may crochet a
decorative edge around the shrug edge, or create a buttonhole/button
in the correct place.
Happy Holidays!!!!
