Preemie Baby Booties

From: JULAGAY@ucrac1.ucr.edu

I beleive that it was Mary who asked for suggestions for teaching
children to knit. I told her that I would post the directions that
I put together to teach some girl scouts to knit preemie baby
booties for a service project.
          Preemie Baby Booties
- worsted weight yarn
- needles, size 5 - 8
 - cast on 22 stitches
Rows 1 - 7 - garter stitch
Row 8: bind off 1st 2 sts, knit remainder
Rows 9 - 11: repeat row 8
Rows 12 - 18: garter stitch
Row 19: Bind off all remaining stitches
- Finishing: sew up along bottom, across toe, up to ankle.
What I learned: cast on before hand. Have a dress rehearsal
w/ any helpers before hand. The two helpers that I had were both
rusty and both were right hand throwers, where I am a left hand
continental knitter. It was confusing for us and the kids. Direct
help is often needed for the binding off.
I knit up a few pair and figured out the weight/ approx yardage
needed for one pair. Then I wound off enough for one pair off of larger
partial (donated) skeins. Each girl got one small ball of yarn and her
own needles. Needles included several sets of dp needles which were
used in sets of twos w/ stoppers (either commercial or wound up rubber
bands) at the "non-working" end.

What I learned: have the work cast on before hand. If you will
have help in the teaching, do a dress rehearsal before hand. The two
