SANTA BOOTIES

These booties fit an infant wearing size 3 (US) infant shoes --
Instructions included for working in the round (and flat on two needles
in parenthesis)

Uses oddments of white and red worsted weight yarn OR yarn and needles
to yield a gauge of 5 st/in

With white --
Cast on 24 stitches USING A HALF HITCH CAST ON (your favorite cast on).
Join, being careful not to twist. ()

P 4 rnds (reverse st. st. 4 rows)
K 4 rnds (st. st. 4 rows)
P 4 rnds (reverse st. st. 4 rows)

Cut white, join red.K 2 rnds (st. st. 2 rows)

EYELET rnd (row)
YO, k2tog around (across)
K1 rnd (P 1 row)

INSTEP (same for both)
K 17 stitches, turn
*sl 1, P9, turn, sl 1 K9, turn *  Repeat from * to * 10 times.
Pick up and knit 10 stitches, 1 in each sl st, down the side of the
instep.  K to end of rnd (row).

K7, pick up and K 10 stitches on other side of instep.  K to end of rnd.
(P27, pick up and P 10, stitches on other side of instep, P to end of row.)

SIDES --
P 3 rnds (reverse st. st. 3 rows)
K 3 rnds (st. st. 3 rows)
P 3 rnds (reverse st. st. 3 rows)
K 3 rnds (st. st. 3 rows)

Heel and Sole shaping -- (RS facing for flat)

rnd (row)1: P 20, P2tog, SSP (purl equivalent of SSK), P 20
rnd 2: P 2, P2tog, P14, P2tog,SSP, P14, SSP, P2
        (row 2: K2, K2tog,K14, SSK, K2tog, K14, SSK, K2)
rnd (row) 3: P17, P2tog, SSP, P17

FINISHING --

Your choice whether to bind off and sew up or graft (using reverse Kitchener
stitch or from the wrong side) the sole.  For flat knitting you will also
need to sew up the back of the foot.
TIE --

Over twist a piece of red yarn and one of white about 40" long.  (I just
tied a slip knot in one end, slid it over a dp and spun it in the direction
of the plying.)  Hold one end of each together and allow to twist together.
I used a yarn needle to run the twisted yarns through the eyelets and then
tied knots and cut to the right length for nice bows.
