SKI HAT WITH EAR FLAPS (aka The Red Baron Flies Again)

... .....

This is a very fast project knit in the round, except for the ear flaps which
are knit first, back and forth, and then attached to hat which is worked in
the round. I use a circular needle for the body of the hat because I knit
faster without changing from one dpn to another; but one set of dpn is
certainly all you need.

The original pattern was issued by Lopi as a 50 cent flyer without copyright
info. I have made some changes; so I think it is clear to post here. If you
are making it for someone with a very large head or BIG hair, try going up to
size 10-1/2 (US) needles.

1 skein (100g) Lopi wool
4 dpn #10 (US) needles
1 circular needle size #10 (if you have it)
crochet hook about the size of the needles

Gauge - 8 sts, 10 rows = 2 inches
Size - Instructions for Women (Men in parentheses). When only one figure is
given, it applies to both sizes.
Abbrev. -
M1 - lift yarn to left-hand needle between stitch just worked and next
stitch, knit into back of stitch: one stitch increased.

EARFLAPS (Work 2)
Using dpn, Cast on 4 sts.
Row 1 (WS) - P
Row 2 - K1,M1, K to last stitch, M1, K1 (2 sts inc.)
Repeat Rows 1 and 2, 6 (7) times more until there are 18 (20) sts.
Work 3 rows in StSt, end with a wrong side row (4 inches from cast on edge).
Leave work on dpn.

Using another dpn, make second earflap.

HAT
Using circular needle, cast on 14(15) sts for back. From RS, K all stitches
18(20) from one dpn for earflap. Cast on 26(28) sts for front. From RS, K all
stitches 18(20) from other dpn for other earflap. Total 76 (83) stitches.
Being careful not to twist stitches, join stitches in a circle and mark
beginning of round.

Brim -- (Directions for garter stitch, non roll brim. Variations: knit only
for roll-type brim; K2, P2 ribbing for block effect)
Row 1- P
Row 2- K
Repeat rows 1 and 2 twice more, until you have 3 garter stitch ridges.

Body --
Knit round in StSt until the body of the hat measures about 4 inches from
edge of brim. Begin decreases.
(Variation: to add a color stripe with charted school name or slogan, make
this section a different color changing back to main color when you begin
decreases for crown).

CROWN
Decrease Row 1- K6(3), *K2tog, K8 (repeat from * around, 7(8) sts dec)
Row 2- K
Decrease Row 3- K6(3), *K2tog, K7 (repeat from * around)
Row 3- K
Decrease Row 5- K6(3), *K2tog, K6 (repeat from * around)

Continue alternating Decrease Rows with Knit rows until you just knit 2tog to
end with 10 sts. Cut yarn and thread through remaining sts. Pull tight and
knot.

FINISHING
Cut 2 lengths of yarn 120-inches long each. Take one piece and fold in half.
Using a crochet hook, pull center loop through bottom point of one earflap
and chain stitch a long tie, about 10 inches. At end of tie, attach a tassel,
if desired.

notes about pictures:From: "Anne Landre" <annelandre@hotmail.com>
I made 5 or 6 hats following the 1995 Gift List pattern for "Ski Hat with Ear Flaps" (aka, the Red Baron Flys Again). Photos of several variations are attached. The purple version was done with a ribbed brim, the others have a brim done in garter stitch. As you will see, a simple fairisle pattern can be worked into the hat, it can be further decorated with contrasting I-cord, and if one adds a row or two of purling about one inch above the brim, the cap takes on more of a kufi shape. The hats were great fun to make and much appreciated by all the recipients.

Variation-- attach another tassel to top of hat, with or without long chain
stitch tie.
