SOCKS

My offering is something that my mother and grandmother have been making for
the past 40 years with some changes through time, so should qualify as
either original or public domain. The pattern is a bit sketchy, but made
with #8 needles fits my big feet (size 8.5 med.), and takes just less than 1
3.5 skein of worsted weight yarn.

Cast on 92.
Knit in garter stitch for 16 rows.

1st row after: K 43, K2 tog., K2, K2 tog., K43
2nd row: P42, P2 tog., P2, P2 tog., P42.

Continue in pattern until 38 st. remain on needle, ending with K row.

K across, adding 1 st on each end.
K back across without adding.

Continue until 6 garter stitch ridges are complete, 50 st. on needle. Cast
off and sew up.Adjust the needle size up or down for adult sizes; use either sport yarn
with smaller needles, or cast on fewer stitches for children's sizes. The
whole family has been wearing them for decades and I couldn't even estimate
how many have been knitted for charity--a nice snuggley slipper that comes
just above the ankle. I'm sorry that it's become too automatic for any of
us to remember guage, or any real nicety to the pattern.
