STOCKING CAP
This is a reversable stocking cap that is nearly windproof.
One side of the cap is a solid color and the other side has a diamond pattern.
I learned the theory of knitting double sided fabric from a book at my local
library, but cannot remember the name or author at this time. I have expanded
my experiments to include working names into the pattern side while maintaining
the solid color on the reverse side (experienced knitters unfamiliar with this
technique can't believe their eyes!)
The pattern is for a snug fitting adult cap. The same pattern can be used for
children or larger people by changing the number of stitches you cast on.
This pattern uses a twelve stitch repeat, so to make it larger add twelve
stitches and to make it smaller delete twelve stitches.
I like to work in the round, so that is the way the pattern is laid out. This
pattern takes extra time to complete as it takes three times around to produce
two rows.
B1 and F1 refer to where the yarn is held while slipping a stitch. When the
pattern calls for B1, hold the yarn behind the work and slip the next stitch
from the left needle to the right needle. When the pattern calls for F1, hold
the yarn in front of the work (between you and the work) and slip the next
stitch from the left to the right needle.
Materials:
1 skein worsted weight yarn for main color
1/2 skein worsted weight yarn for pattern color
1 set #7 dpn
1 cable needle or stitch holder
Cast on 108 stitches in the main color and divide evenly between three needles
(36 per needle).
K1, P1 around in main color. This is a base round.
Pattern:
round 1: Use pattern color - K1, slip next stitch while holding yarn in front
of work (F1), *K1, F1, repeat from * around.
round 2: Use main color - slip knit stitch while holding yarn in back of work
(B1), *P1, B1, repeat from * around.
round 3: Use main color - *B1, P1, (K1, P1)5X repeat from * around.
round 4: Use pattern color - repeat round 1.
round 5: Use main color - repeat round 2.
round 6: Use main color - *K1, P1, B1, P1, (K1, P1)3X, B1, P1 repeat from *
around.
round 7: Use pattern color - repeat round 1.
round 8: Use main color - repeat round 2.
round 9: Use main color - *(K1, P1)2X, B1, P1, K1, P1, B1, P1, K1, P1, repeat
from * around.
round 10: Use pattern color - repeat round 1.
round 11: Use main color - repeat round 2.
round 12: Use main color - *(K1, P1)3X, B1, P1, (K1, P1)2X, repeat from *
around.
round 13: Use pattern color - repeat round 1.
round 14: Use main color - repeat round 2.
round 15: Use main color - *(K1, P1)2X, B1, P1, K1, P1, B1, P1, K1, P1, repeat
from * around.
round 16: Use pattern color - repeat round 1.
round 17: Use main color - repeat round 2.
round 18: Use main color - *K1, P1, B1, P1, (K1, P1)3X, B1, P1, repeat from *
around.
Repeat rounds 1 - 18 until cap measures aproximately 10 inches in length.
Decreases:
Decreases are worked by rearranging the stitches so that two knit stitches can
be knitted together and two pearl stitches can be pearled together at each
decrease. This usually requires a holding device of some kind such as a cable
needle.
first decrease(front): Use pattern color - *(K1, F1)4X, knit next two knit
stitches together, slip two perl stitches with yarn held in front of
work, repeat from * around.
first decrease(back): Use main color - *(B1, P1)4X, B1, P2(together), repeat
from * around. 90 stitches on kneedles.
row A: Use main color - *B1, P1, (K1, P1)4X, repeat from * around.
row B: Use pattern color - *K1, F1, repeat from * around.
row C: Use main color - *B1, P1, repeat from * around.
row D: Use main color - repeat row A.
second decrease(front): Use pattern color - *(K1, F1)3X, knit next two knit
stitches together, slip two perl stitches with yarn held in front of
work, repeat from * around.
second decrease(back): Use main color - *(B1, P1)3X, B1, P2(together), repeat
from * around. 72 stitches on needles.
row A: Use main color - *B1, P1, (K1, P1)3X, repeat from * around.
row B: Use pattern color - *K1, F1, repeat from * around.
row C: Use main color - *B1, P1, repeat from * around.
row D: Use main color - repeat row A.
third decrease(front): Use pattern color - *knit next two knit stitches
together, slip two perl stitches with yarn held in front of work,
repeat from * around.
third decrease(back): Use main color - *B1, P2(together), repeat from * around.
36 stitches on needles.
fourth decrease(front): Use pattern color - *knit next two knit stitches
together, slip two perl stitches with yarn held in front of work,
repeat from * around.
third decrease(back): Use main color - *B1, P2(together), repeat from * around.
18 stitches on needles.
Finishing:
Cut yarns leaving about twelve inches. Run main color yarn through the pearltitches
and draw tight. Run the pattern color yarn through the knit stitches
and draw tight.
Work ends in.
Done!
