WOOLY"S BACKPACK

From: Tgturk@aol.com
This is a pattern for a backpack for a stuffed aminal that stands on all four
legs (not
seated like a teddy bear). It is made in garter stitch so the number of rows
and stitches is the same per measurement unit, ex. 6 st =1 in., 6 rows=1 in.

The pack rides on the aminal's back and
has straps that begin at the pack's top corners ( at the shoulders),
go in front of the front legs,
cross under the tummy,
and come up to fasten at the rear corners of the pack. MEASURE THIS LENGTH.

Measure the animal's back to determine how wide the pack should be.
Cast on enough stitches in your chosen yarn with appropriate size needles.

Knit the pieceTWICE as long as it is wide PLUS 6 ROWS.

At this point you will add the straps for the pack.
At the beginning of the next two rows, cast on enough stitches to make the
straps of the desired length.

K 2 rows

At the beginning of the next two rows, cast off the strap stitches.

Continue knitting the original stitches. When the length from straps to end
is about 1/2 the width measurement, cast of fall stitches.

You will end up with a rectangle that is about 2 1/2 times as long as it is
wide. About 1/5 from the top, there are thin straps at right angles.
Imagine a cross with a thick upright and very thin arms.

Fold the bottom edge down to the level of the straps and sew the sides.
Fold the top edge down to form a closing flap.
Still with me? Does your folded piece look like this?
                        ____________
HHHHHHHH flap HHHHHHHHHH

___________

Close the flap, and fasten the straps at the bottom edge of the backpack with
velcro or snaps.

Its fun to play with this pattern, modify to stocknette or double knitting,
make in colored stripes, try textures, use buttons to fasten the straps and
flap, etc.

Wooly is a real tough stuffed bear who backpacks and camps with his human.
Wooly always carries his own supplies and packs out his garbage. Wooly and
his human have wandered five continents in the 25 years they have been
together.

Please let me know how this project works for you. Thank you.
