The WOVEN STITCH

NEW YEARS GIFT

The following is a stitch I came up with while trying to get rid of a bunch
of variegated yarn I had. I used it in an afghan but I think if a worsted
weight (4.5 sts to the inch) or a bulky weight (3 sts to the inch)
were used it would make a nice sturdy fabric for a bag. This stitch does not
curl even when knitted flat. The end result of this stitch is that it looks
rather woven in a diagonal kind of way. So I guess that's what I'll call
it.

The WOVEN STITCH

st = Stitch
K = Knit
P = Purl
WYIF = With yarn in front
WFIB = With yarn in back

FLAT VERSION
Using two strands throughout
cast on an even number of stitches (each stitch has two loops)
turn

Row 1 (wrong side):
P into 1st loop of 1st st
P together the 2nd loop of 1st st and 1st loop of 2nd st
P together the 2nd loop of 2nd st and the 1st loop of 3rd st
Continue until you reach the 2nd loop of last st
WYIF slip the loop as if to purl
(What you will have is the number of cast on stitches plus 1 loop)
Turn

Row 2 (right side):
lone loop is considered 1st stitch
K together lone loop with 1st loop of 2nd st
K together 2nd loop of 2nd st with first loop of 3rd st
Continue until you reach the 2nd loop of last st
WYIB slip the loop as if to purl
(What you will have is the number of cast on stitches plus 1 loop)
Turn

Repeat these two rows until desired length

CIRCULAR VERSION
Using two strands throughout
Cast on an even number of stitches (each stitch has two loops)
To Join - K into 1st loop only of 1st st
K together the 2nd loop of 1st st and 1st loop of 2nd st
K together the 2nd loop of 2nd st and the 1st loop of 3rd st
Continue around until last loop of last stitch
K together the 2nd loop of last st with the 1st loop of 1st
Continue around

Note: Don't worry about the yarns twisting - it just makes for a more
interesting fabric.

Happy Knitting!
