Bell Pattern Shawl

The Bell Pattern Shawl has 2 versions, yet both are the same. Pick the one that is easier for you to understand.

Bell Pattern Shawl (Original)
Bell Pattern Shawl (version 2)

Bell Pattern Shawl: (Original with hints)

Materials:
Sport weight yarn: 10-12 ounces (something glitzy is nice)
US No. 10 needles (29-inch circular preferred for ease in handling stitches)

Gauge:
approximately 4 sts = 1 inch; it is not critical

Size:
about 47 inches along each of the short sides; 67 inches on long side

Pattern:
Cast on 2 sts. Work in garter st (k every row), increasing 1 st in first st on every row, until there are 11 sts on needle.

Start bell pattern (**Note: there is only one pattern repeat on the first 18 rows of bell pattern):

Row 1: inc 1 in first st, *yo, k 8, yo, k 1, repeat from *, ending last repeat k 2

Row 2: inc 1, k 2, *p 8, k 3, repeat, ending k 3

Row 3: inc 1, k 2, *yo, k 8, yo, k 3, repeat, ending k 4

Row 4: inc 1, k 4, *p 8, k 5, repeat to end

Row 5: inc 1, k 4, *yo, k 8, yo, k 5, repeat, ending k 6

Row 6: inc 1, k 6, *p 8, k 7, repeat to end

Row 7: inc 1, k 6, *k 4 tog-b, k 4 tog, k 7, repeat, ending k 8

Row 8: inc 1, k to end

Row 9: inc 1, k 4, *yo, k 8, yo, k 1, repeat, ending k 6

Row 10: inc 1, k 6, *p 8, k 3, repeat, ending k 7

Row 11: inc 1, k 6, *yo, k 8, yo, k 3, repeat, ending k 8

Row 12: inc 1, k 8, *p 8, k 5, repeat, ending k 9

Row 13: inc 1, k 8, *yo, k 8, yo, k 5, repeat, ending k 10

Row 14: inc 1, k 10, *p 8, k 7, repeat, ending k 11

Row 15: inc 1, k 10, *k 4 tog-b, k 4 tog, k 7, repeat, ending k 12

Rows 16-18: inc 1, k to end

Repeat rows 1 through 18 for pattern until shawl is size desired, ending with row 18 of pattern followed by about 1 inch of garter stitch, continuing increase at beginning of each row. I worked 13 pattern repeats. Bind off. Work an edging if desired. (I worked a crocheted shell edge all around; a knitted edge would be nice, or the two shorter sides could be fringed.)

Increase options:
**All that note means is that there is only ONE bell pattern in the first 18 rows.

So when you begin cast on 2 stitches. Increase in the first stitch at the beginning of each row until you have 11 stitches and do this in garter stitch, i.e. knit every row. Janet Lynn jhly@li.com Connecticut

Here you are with the 11 stitches on the first pattern row. You increase in the first stitch, you yarn over and then knit 8 stitches (you have now used 9 of the 11 stitches), then you yarn over and knit 2 stitches, that's your 11. The next time you get to the first row of the pattern, you will have many more stitches on your needle and all the repeats will be yarn over, knit 8, yarn over, knit 1, EXCEPT the last repeat which will be yarn over, knit 8, yarn over knit 2. I think once you get this first row right, you'll see how the last repeat in the pattern sequence is sometimes different. Roxi Walters Roxbarb@aol.com

Follow the instructions EXACTLY as they are written. It works. Do your garter st beginning until you have 11 sts. Then begin the pattern and just work it as it reads. The only thing I changed in the instructions was the beginning of each row: I do: knit 1, make 1 instead of increasing in the first st. Knitting in the front and back of the first st doesn't look so great, IMO. Joan Hamer told me she's doing it: K 1, yo for her increase, so she'll have a little eyelet right on the edge for an easy edging pick-up.

I'm sending you the stitch count for each pattern row - I sat down and did it before I started knitting, and it helped a lot to keep my place when I got interrupted. The numbers are what you have at the end of the row.

Row 1: 14 sts

Row 2: 15 sts

Row 3: 18 sts

Row 4: 19 sts

Row 5: 22 sts

Row 6: 23 sts

Row 7: 18 sts

Row 8: 19 sts

Row 9: 22 sts

Row 10: 23 sts

Row 11: 26 sts

Row 12: 27 sts

Row 13: 30 sts

Row 14: 31 sts

Row 15: 26 sts

Row 16: 27 sts

Row 17: 28 sts

Row 18: 29 sts

The first group of 18 sts will give you 2 bells, one on top of the other. The 2nd group will give you 2 repeats of 3 bells each, with the center bell located above the single bells. Each group of 18 rows will add 2 more bells, one at each end.

Here is a re-worded version of the pattern. Says exactly what Rosemary's version did, but in different terms. maybe this will help.

Here are some things I noticed which made it much easier for me to knit it:

* for me the 2 crucial rows are #1 and #9. If I got them right, then the rest seemed to fall into place.

* then on row 2, the 2nd stitch of the k2 (after the k1, M1 at the beginning of the row) is the yo from the first row.

* also on row 2, when it says to k3, they are the sts that were done in the previous row as "yo, k1, yo".

* on subsequent rows, after the K1, M1 directions, Rosemary tells us to knit a certain # of stitches: the last of those sts will be a yo from the previous row.

* on rows 5, 7,11,14 after the instructions to P8, the very next knit st we are to make will be to knit a yarn over from the previous row. the last knit stitch in the group will also be to knit a yarn over from the previous row.

* all instruction to either k8 or P8 will be over the same group of stitches, producing an 8 stitch area of stockinette surrounded by a triangular garter stitch section.

* in row 9 of the pattern, I found that if I made sure that the fourth st if the k8 section was directly above where I did the K4 tog-b, then I had correctly placed my st
