The ($10) Striped Rolled Edge Stocking Cap

Size:
Hat will fit a fairly large adult head, measuring approximately 22.5", but please see 'Disclaimer' below.

Materials:
Lamb's Pride Worsted, two different colored skeins.
US Size 8 needles. (**see below)

Gauge: 1"=4.25 st (4"=17 st) 1"=5.25 rows (4"=21 rows)

Abbreviations:
K2T = Knit 2 together

Pattern:
With size 8 needles, cast on 90 stitches in color A. Knit 9 rows in stockinette stitch. (Note: Entire hat is knit in stockinette stitch. After the rolled edge stripe, each stripe = 6 rows.)

Tie on color B.

Stripe 1: Knit 6 rows of B, (twisting color A into color B at beginning of every other row, to avoid 'loops'.)

Stripe 2: Knit 6 rows of A.

Stripe 3: Knit 6 rows of B.

Stripe 4: Begin decreases as follows: On first row of stripe, [K2T, K28], repeat twice, to end of row.

Continue to decrease 3 stitches every first row of each stripe, i.e.

Stripe 5: [K2T, K27],

Stripe 6: [K2t, K26],

Stripe 7: [K2T, K25], etc., until you have get to [K2T, K4].

Begin decreasing as follows: Decrease as before, but on every other row, until you get down to 9 stitches. (This should add approximately 5 more stripes, give or take a stripe!)

Cut yarn and thread through remaining 9 stitches. Pull tight to finish off. Carefully Sew seam, (if necessary). Make tassel of choice! Hat should end up being approximately 36"-38" long, not including tassel!

**Hat can be knit on a circular needle, then switch to dpns when work becomes too small. No seam! Yeah!

Disclaimer: I've knit this hat only once, but began with 96 stitches. It came out a tad loose, even on my big head! (22.5") The only changes I've made here are the # of cast on stitches, and then spreading out the decreases a bit at the end, so that the hat will be long enough. If you have a HUGE head, you could start w/ 96 st, begin dec. [K2T, K30], and then decrease every row until you reach 9 st. Two skeins will still work for this. Or, you could really slow down the decreases, say, a third of the way through, buy two more skeins of yarn, and have a scarf/hat!
