100 gm. Dale Heilo or other sport wt. wool for cap; 150 gm. for scarf
one pair each US 3, 4 and 6 knitting needles (metric 3.25 mm, 3.5 mm,
4 mm) or size needed for gauge
tapestry needle for finishing
Gauge:
On largest needles in stockinette stitch, 6 sts / 8 rows = 1"
Pattern:
Waffle Check Rib Stitch
Rows 1 & 3 (WS): K2, *P3, K2; repeat from * across row.
Row 2: P2; *K3, P2; repeat from * across row.
Row 4: Purl across row.
Repeat rows 1-4 for pattern.
Cap
Using middle size needles, CO 92 (102) sts.
K 3 rows.
Work in waffle check rib for 2.5" ( 2.75"), end row 6.
Change to smallest size needles and repeat rows 1 & 2 of rib for 2.25" ( 2.5"), ending on WS with row 1.
Change to largest size needles & work even in stockinette stitch for 3.25" (3.75") more, dec 1 st at beginning and end of last row, ending with a WS row: 90 (100) sts remain.
Total length 8" (9").
Shape crown
Row 1: *K2tog, K8; rep from * across.
Row 2 & all WS rows: Purl across.
Row 3: *K2tog, K7; rep from * across.
Row 5: *K2tog, K6; rep from * across.
Row 7: *K2tog, K5; rep from * across.
Row 9: *K2tog, K4; rep from * across.
Row 11: *K2tog, K3; rep from * across.
Row 13: *K2tog, K2; rep from * across.
Row 15: *K2tog, K1; rep from * across.
Row 17: K2tog across.
Cut yarn, leaving tail for finishing. Draw through rem sts & pull tightly. Add pompom, if desired.
Scarf
With largest needles, CO 32 (37) sts.
Work in waffle check rib for 40" (44") or desired length.
Bind off. Add fringe, if desired.
For adult sizes, use worsted wt. wool and larger needles, gauge 4.5 - 5 sts/ 6 - 7 rows = 1". Add 2-3" to length before shaping crown.
