Materials:
Less than 1 100gr ball chunky. I used Paton's Wool Chunky. Of course,
no superwash for the fulled version.
Needles, about US10/6mm. dpns or short (16"/40cm) circular.
Gauge:
About 3.5 st/in in stockinette stitch. Not critical, if the first one
doesn't yield the right size, add or subtract multiples of 5 stitches.
Abbreviations:
k1b is knit one stitch through back of loop
Pattern:
Cast on 75 stitches, join,
Round 1: *k1b, p1, k2, p1* repeat between * * to end of round.
Round 2: *k1, p1, k2, p1* repeat between ** to end of round.
Round 3: *k1b, p1, knit second stitch on left needle, leaving stitch on left needle, knit first stitch, then sl both stitches from needle (you'll have two knit stitches on right needle in a little twist), p1* repeat between ** to end of round.
Repeat rounds 2 and 3 until headband is 4 1/2 " from cast on edge. Cast off loosely in k1b, p1, k2, p1 rib.
Finishing:
weave in ends.
Fulling:
Toss this in with a load of wash, go knit something else. When putting
wash into the dryer, take a look - fulled enough? Lay flat to dry. Not
fulled enough either run it through with the next load of wash, or (what
I did, I'm in a hurry) toss it in the dryer with the clothes.
With one wash and one dry cycle, my finished headband was three and a half inches wide, covering my ears and giving a nice, slightly retro look. I've also made the same one, unfulled, using the usual number of stitches for one of Kim's headbands, rounded to the nearest multiple of five (for me that's 95 stitches, but I like mine slightly stretched and snug on the head), and worsted yarn and size US7/4.5mm needles, work to 3 1/2 in (8cm) in width.
