Measurements:
Approximate length of ribbing 2 3/4 inches (to be folded over where
ribbing and stockinette sections meet).
Approximate length to ankle when folded over 13 1/2 inches.
Length of foot from heel to beginning of toe shaping 6 1/2 inches for women's size 6 shoe (7 inches for women's size 7 shoe).
Length of entire foot 9 1/4 inches for size 6 shoe (9 3/4 inches for women's size 7 shoe).
Materials:
Sport or worsted weight yarn
1 Set of 5 double pointed knitting needles: US#3 (3.25mm)
Gauge:
6 sts/8 rounds = 1 inch
Pattern:
CO 64 sts
Work in k1, p1 ribbing for 20 rows. Socks to be worn with ribbed section folded over stockinette stitch section.
Knit in stockinette stitch for 39 rounds OR to desired length to calf shaping. Place a marker, for center back, if needed. Center back is just before the first knit stitch to the left of the cast on yarn tail.
Next Round (Decrease round): k1, k2tog, knit across to last 3 sts of round, ssk, k1. SSK (slip 2 stitches knitwise, one at a time, return these 2 stitches to the left hand needle, insert tip of left-hand needle through front lps of both these sts and knit together.
Work even for 4 rows.
Making decreases on rounds 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, and 75, work until 100 rounds have been completed from ribbing. Remove marker.
Begin Heel
Knit across first 12 stitches on needle #1, turn.
Round 1 of heel: Purl 22 stitches ( on needle #1 and #4) for the heel.
Continue in stockinette stitch on heel stitches, until 17 rounds have
been completed, ending on a (ws) purl row.
Turning the Heel
K 16 st, sl 1, k 1, psso, turn.
Sl 1, p 8, p 2 tog, turn.
Sl 1, k 8, sl 1, k 1, psso, turn.
Continue until heel turning has been completed.
Next Round (rs): Knit across the remaining 10 sts.
Pick up stitches:
With a crochet hook, pick up 12 stitches, transferring them to your
knitting needle.
Knit across 24 stitches of needle #2 and #3.
Pick up 12 stitches, again transferring them to our knitting needle,
and knit to the end of the round: 58 sts
Arrange stitches so that the 5 stitches to the left of the center of the heel, and 12 picked up stitches are on needle #1, the 5 stitches to the right of the center of the heel and the 12 picked up stitches are on needle #4, and the remaining 24 stitches are equally divided between needles #2 and #3.
Next Round: Work even in stockinette stitch, knitting in the back of those stitches that were picked up, and in the front of the others.
Dec Round: K across to last 2 sts of needle #1, k2 tog. K across needles #2 and #3. At the beginning of needle #4, ssk. K across to end of needle #4.
Work 2 rounds even.
Repeat these last 3 rounds, until there are 48 sts
K even until 22 rounds have been completed after the last decrease round, or until the foot is 6 1/2 inches long ( 7 inches for women's size 7) OR about 2 1/2 inches less than desired length to end of toe.
Toe Shaping
Next Row (Dec Round): K across to last 3 sts of needle #1. K 2 tog,
k1.
At the beginning of needle #2, k1, SSK. K across to last 3 sts of needle
#3. K 2 tog, k1.
At the beginning of needle #4, k1, SSK. K across to the end of the
round: 44 sts
Work 3 rounds even.
Work Dec Round: 40 sts Work 2 rounds even.
Repeat last 3 rounds once: 36 sts
Work 1 Dec Round: 32 sts Work 1 round even.
Repeat last 2 rounds twice: 24 sts
Work 2 more Decrease Rounds: 16 sts
Knit across the 4 sts of needle #1, and arrange stitches so that there are 8 sts on 2 needles.
Kitchener Stitch: Line up needles, one in back of the other, with points facing to the right, with the yarn attached to the back needle.
Cut yarn leaving about a 12 inch tail. Thread tail through an embroidery needle.
Draw the embroidery needle purlwise, through the 1st st of the front knitting needle, pulling the yarn through. Draw the embroidery needle knitwise, through the 1st st of the back knitting needle, pulling the yarn through.
Step 1: Draw the embroidery needle through the 1st st KNITWISE of the FRONT knitting needle. Slip this st off, and draw through the stitch next to it, purlwise.
Step 2: Draw the embroidery needle through the 1st st PURLWISE of the BACK knitting needle. Slip this st off, and draw through the stitch next to it, knitwise.
Repeat steps 1 and 2, until only one stitch remains on each needle.
Draw the embroidery needle purlwise, through the st remaining on the front knitting needle, pulling the yarn through and dropping the stitch off the needle.
Draw the embroidery needle knitwise, through the st remaining on the back knitting needle, pulling the yarn through and dropping the stitch off the needle.
Draw the tail through sock to the inside, turn the sock inside out and weave in tail. Weave in tail of cast on at ribbing.
