Mohair Mittens

Hi to all who would like the pattern I converted to the machine. Remember I said that I am a hand knitter who uses the machine to hurry through the the boring part of knitting.

I have a singer 155 bulky so I don't have the standard conversions but I know that all you experts can convert to the standard. This pattern converts these mittens to mittens which would take me an entire day to knit by hand to an evening of knitting. I can make them to give to someone the next day for a quick gift exchange, and believe me they look very beautiful.

The conversions are all my own.

Materials: three to four balls of mohair like Impressions or Penguin, or LaGran or Ironstone or anything in mohair type that will brush up to look like fur.

Use two strands throughout.

SET BULKY MACHINE AT T: #10 (standard machine convert to every other needle and use the tension that will knit this) Gauge is about 3 1/2 st per inch.

With waste yarn cast on 33 sts

Machine knit 8 rows (since this will be above the ribbing you can adjust here for size around the wrist for smaller or longer hands. ) But I make these for adults and have found that 8 rows is just right.

Then on the 1st stitch in on the carriage side use E. Zimmermann's trick - knit 6 stitches on waste yarn by hand (not with the machine) Just knit the stitches for 2 or 3 rows and leave on the machine

Next row: Knit across the row with the mohair

Next: You can also adjust here for size. I knit 28 to 30 rows for adult size ... Remember you can still adjust once it's removed from the machine. If too long - rip out rows - if too long just hand knit on US size 10 needles for a few more rows.

If 30 rows is OK, then do the following:

K2tog, then K1, then K2tog again. Then K2, (K2tog) to end of row

Knit one row without decreasing

*K1, K2tog across

Knit one row without decreasing

*K2tog across

Cast off on waste yarn (Do this so if you have to adjust size later you just rip away) If you find a size that is ok you can bind off on the machine. I bind off by hand.

That is all for the machine knitting the rest I do by hand as follows: (again, you guys can come up with an easy way to do the thumb on the machine that also looks good ... since I am a control freak ... I do the thumb by hand since I have more control.

Thumb:

Pick up 12 to 14sts  on double pointed needles. Pick up a stitch in any areas where you think there will be gaps. These can be decreased on the first round.

Knit 8 or 9 rounds.

Decrease for top of thumb as follows:

K2tog twice, then *K2tog, K1 around

Next round: knit

K2tog around

Bind off.

Finishing:

Cuff
Pick up stitches by hand (US size 8)

Knit 1 round, decreasing 5 sts evenly around. You want about 5 fewer stitches than the body of the mitten.

P 1 row

Rib
I rib by hand, either K1, P1 or K2, P2

Rib for 2 - 4 inches.

Seam by hand

Brush up the mohair using a hair brush. Don't be afraid to go at it, really brush hard until you have a mitten that looks like fur.
