Santa Hat

Materials:
Worsted weight yarn, some white and more red;
circular dpn (I used US 7s for cast on, and US 9s for body of hat; and used Brown Sheep Nature Spun wool)

Pattern:
I cast on 66 sts in white with smaller needles and worked about 2 inches in white loop st which I found in Homespun Handknit, p.98: *wind yarn around middle finger as it's held behind work to form loop, k 1 but do not remove st from left needle; sl st just formed to left needle, remove finger from loop and k 2 tog (st just formed and next st) through back lps; rep from * to end of round. k next round. I made 5 series of loops.

Tricky part: Change to red yarn and larger needles, but now you have to tuck the loops through your work so that they are on the outside if you want the stockinette st to be on the outside. To make a smooth transition, wrap around the last st of the row, which is right next to the first st, as if for short row.

Work for about 6 inches. K30, place marker, k3, place marker, k30, place marker, k3, place marker. Work double decrease on either side of 3 sts, so that you are decreasing 4 sts per dec row. Work one row plain in between each dec row.
Work to point, join sts, tie off.
Make a looped pompom and attach to point.
