Materials:
50-100 grams of yarn A. This should be a soft and stretchy yarn . I
used a DK cotton chenille.
100-150 grams of yarn B. This should be outdoorsy yarn, it can be the same weight as yarn A or heavier. I used double stranded DK ombre boucle wool .
2 sets of appropriate size needles , mine were 5mm. circulars
Pattern:
Cast on approx 30 stitches in waste yarn, knit a couple of rows.
Then knitting ALTERNATE stitches with A and B start stocking stitch
pattern and work a piece long enough to fit the back of your neck ( say
3").
Next divide the stitches, A stitches onto one needle (all 15 of them) and B stitches (15 again) onto another.
The A stitches will form the inner scarf.
Choose a lacy or a garter pattern (increase 1 or 2 stitches at this
point if necessary).
Decide which way you will tie the inner scarf (right over left or vice versa).
Work your pattern in the A yarn for approx. 12" on the short side and 18" on the long side.
Taper the ends to a point so the scarf will not be too bulky at the throat.
For your B yarn a chunky rib or or a moss stitch will be nice and windproof .
Again decide which side will be long and which short.
Increase a little if needed for the pattern. Work to 18"-24" on the short end and at least 30" on the long side (so you can throw it round your neck).
When you are close to the ends of your outer scarf, add some bobbles or cables, these will give extra weight to lessen the chance of flying . If you like you can add a few details in contrast stripes with yarn A at the ends of scarf B to harmonise the two.
This double scarf can be made in different yarns and/or colours or in different weights of the same yarn. Please yourself, or your leftovers stash.
