Thrummed Slippers

These are just above the ankle slippers, very warm. They are knit flat, from the heel out to the toe.

To thrum: Pull off a piece of roving about 4 inches long. Separate into smaller 4 inch pieces. The roving piece is then wrapped around 3 fingers, using the end to wrap the middle. It is knit in with the working yarn. Put needle into the next stitch, put roving around needle, wrap yarn as usual, finish stitch.

Materials:
3 ounces heavy worsted weight yarn 7 ounces roving Size 8 US (5MM) needles or size you need to reach gauge of 4 stitches to an inch. Row gauge won't matter.

Pattern:
Cast on 120 stitches. The first 20 and the last 20 are a cuff. They will be knit in stockinette (k1 row, p1 row)

Row 1 and all wrongside rows (wrongside): Knit 20, purl 80, knit 20.

Row 2: Purl 20, *knit in a thrum, knit 3* until last 20 stitches, purl 20.

Rows 4 and 8: Purl 20, knit , purl 20.

Row 6: Purl 20, knit 2, knit thrum, *knit 3, knit a thrum* knit 1, purl 20. Repeat rows 1-8 until the piece is 1/2 of the ankle measurement.

Next 2 rows, staying in pattern, cast off 34 stitches at the start of each row. This will leave 52 stitches on the needles.

Next 16 rows, staying in pattern, decrease 1 stitch at the start of each row, 36 stitches left. (This allows for the instep and ease of getting on.)

Knit in pattern until 2 inches less than the length of the foot, end on the wrong side.

Row 1: Knit 6, K2tog, knit 2, SSK, Knit 12, K2tog, knit 2, SSK, knit 6. (32 stitches)

Row 13: K2tog, knit 2, SSK, K2tog, knit 2, SSK. (8 stitches)

Finishing:

Method 1: Thread a needle with 12 inches of yarn, run through the 8 stitches and draw up tight. Use the yarn to sew up the front of the slipper, leaving the cuff open in front. Put more yarn on the needle and sew up the back of the slipper, including the cuff.

Method 2: Kitchener stitch the toe together, then sew up as in method 1.
