Materials:
2 50 g balls (or 1 100 g ball) DK weight yarn. I used Balkan Tweed,
3.5 mm (sz 4 US) dpns (I use 4 needles)
Gauge:
25 sts/4 in
Ribbing Pattern:
(K2, P1, K2, P2, K3, P2) x4 (ie: repeat between ( ) a total of 4 times).
Eyelet Pattern (from Barbara Walker's 2nd Treasury of Knitting Stitches):
Rnds 1-3: (K5, P2, K3, P2) x4.
Rnd 4: (K2tog, YO, K1, YO, SSK, P2, K2 tog, YO, K1, P2) x4.
Rnds 5-7: (K5, P2, K3, P2) x4.
Rnd 8: (K2tog, YO, K1, YO, SSK, P2, K1, YO, SSK, P2) x4.
1st Sock:
Cast on 49 sts & distribute on 3 ndls as follows:
ndl 1: 17 sts
ndl 2: 14 sts
ndl 3: 18 sts
To join sts in a circle, move the last st from ndl 3 to ndl 1 being careful not to twist your sts. Knit these 2 sts together for the first st (this helps to hide the spot where the sts are joined in the round).
Knit ribbing pattern for 10 rnds. Work eyelet pattern until total length of sock is 6 in (5 repeats of eyelet pattern for me), ending with rnd 3 or 7. This is not critical, it just keeps the eyelets from being next to the heel flap.
Heel Flap
K 5, P1 from ndl 1. Slip the rest of the sts from ndl 1 onto ndl 2.
Turn work. Starting with the sts just worked, begin heel flap:
Row 1: sl1, P23 (After the 6 sts, work remaining sts from ndl 3 onto your working ndl. Distribute the instep sts onto 2 ndls; makes it a little easier to work the heel flap).
Row 2: sl1, K1 across row
Repeat these 2 rows for a total of 14 repeats or desired length of heel flap.
You can continue the heel flap pattern as you turn the heel, just line up the slipped sts of the turning with the slipped sts on the heel flap. It's okay to sl 2 sts at the beginning of a row to maintain the heel flap pattern.
Turn Heel
With wrong side facing you,
Row 1: sl1, P12, P2tog, P1, turn.
Row 2: sl1, K3, SSK, K1, turn.
Row 3: sl1, P4, P2tog, P1, turn.
Row 4: sl1, K5, SSK, K1, turn.
Continue decreasing in this manner until all heel flap sts have been worked.
Gusset
Using the same ndl that the heel sts are on, pick up 14 sts along side of heel flap. Work sts on ndl 2 in eyelet pattern (beginning with rnd 4 or 8 depending on where you stopped to do the heel flap). With new ndl pick up 14 sts along other side of heel flap. Knit 7 sts from ndl 1 onto ndl 3. I continued the heel flap st pattern under the heel (the 14 middle sts: first 7 sts on ndl 1 and last 7 sts on ndl 3; pattern begins with sts on ndl 3) until the gusset was finished. The heel flap pattern becomes one row knitted and one row alternating sl1, K1 to correspond with pattern on heel flap. Also, the instep pattern begins and ends with a P1 instead of the usual P2 between eyelet sts.
Rnd 1: ndl1 1 K across; ndl 2 work in eyelet pattern; ndl 3 K across.
Rnd 2: ndl1 1 K to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1; ndl 2 work in eyelet pattern; ndl 3 K1, SSK, K to end.
Repeat these 2 rnds until 12 sts are left on each of ndls 1 and 3.
Work foot maintaining eyelet pattern on ndl 2 (instep) and knitting sts on ndls 1 and 3 (bottom of foot; Rnd: K12, eyelet pattern for 24 sts, K12) until sock reaches 2-2 1/2 inches shorter than your desired foot length.
Toe Shaping
Rnd 1: K to last 3 sts, K2 tog, K1; ndl 2: K1, SSK, K to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1; ndl 3: K1, SSK, K to end.
Rnds 2-3: K.
Repeat these 2 rnds 7 times, then do one more decrease rnd, and K another rnd. Knit sts from ndl 1 onto ndl 3. Graft the remaining 16 sts together.
2nd Sock
There are some slight changes for the second sock because the eyelet pattern isn't evenly centered on the sock. The changes make the two socks (at least on the instep) mirror images of each other. I will only give the changes between the two sock here rather than write out the entire sock pattern again.
Distribute the cast on sts thus: ndl 1 17 sts, ndl 2 17 sts, ndl 3, 15 sts (remember to move the last st from ndl 3 to ndl 1 & Ktog with 1st st on ndl 1).
Ribbing pattern:
(K3, P2, K2, P1, K2, P2) x4.
Eyelet Pattern:
Rnds 1-3: (K3, P2, K5, P2) x4.
Rnd 4: (K2tog, YO, K1, P2, K2tog, YO, K1, YO, SSK, P2) x4.
Rnds 5-7: (K3, P2, K5, P2) x4.
Rnd 8: (K1, YO, SSK, P2, K2tog, YO, K1, YO, SSK, P2) x4.
To center heel flap: K3, P1, turn. Begin heel flap pattern on 24 sts beginning with the sts just worked.
