Cables and Lace Baby Booties

This pattern is a very old pattern for a baby bootie. It came to me about 20 years ago when a neighbor came with an old handwritten page of notes and one rather felted baby bootie to see if I could find out the pattern that it was made by. The bootie had been made by her mother for the neighbor's children, now she wanted to make the same bootie for her great-grandchild-to-be. It took a bit of work, but I figured it out. The only thing I asked was to use it myself and she told
me of course. I have made it many times myself for those times when something really special is wanted for a baby.

Materials:
Baby yarn or fingering yarn
Size 0 ( US) needles

Pattern:
Cast on 25 sts. These cast on sts become the center back seam.

On twists and cables hold sts in front

Row 1: p3, (k2, yo, k1) p3, k6 p3, (k2, yo, k1) *** p2, k1, yo, k1.

Row 2: (wrong side) k2, p1, k2, * (p2, yo, p2tog) k3, p6, k3, (p2, yo, p2 tog), k3.

Row 3: p3, (k2, yo, k2 tog) p3, k6, p3, (k2, yo, k2 tog) p2, k1, ** (yo, k1, yo, k1).

Row 4: k4, p1, k2, continue as row 2 from *

Row 5: same as row 3 to ** end yo, k1, yo, k1, yo, k1, yo, k1.

Row 6: k8, p1, k2, continue as row 2 from *

Row 7: as row 5, ending k8.

Row 8: bind off point (first 8 sts) continue as row 2 from *

Row 9: twist row - p3, (twist 2 x 2) p3 (cable 3 & 3) p3, (twist 2 x 2), p2, k1, yo, k1.

Repeat rows 2 - 9 till end of 3rd panel (3rd point) when before you twist add 21 sts for instep. Knit the pattern as row 1 to *** and continue in pattern. After 3 more points have been made bind off the 21 instep sts without making the twist & cable. Continue top of bootie for 3 more
points.

Foot:
Pick up about 40 sts across one side to center front. Using a second DP needle pick up same number of sts on remaining side. Plain knit (garter st) for 16 rows (8 ridges). On right side row - decrease:

k1, k2 tog, k to within 5 sts of end of 1st needle, k 2 tog, k3. (second needle) k 3, k2 tog, k to within 3 sts of end, k 2 tog, k 1.

Knit next row plain.

Repeat these last two rows 3 times more. Turn bootie wrong side out, knit seam together (3 needle bind off). Sew back seam.

The use of ( ) in the pattern is only to help see the pattern more clearly.
