Foot Papooses

Thought I'd post my gift pattern now. by my friend Caia was a bag of acrylic yarn that was, as she said, "donated by someone's grandmother". Yes, she is a fiber snob, and there is no way
that she would have bought it. But anyway, in this bag of yarn there was a pair of slipper-sock things that, when put on, resembled socks with laces.

They are very warm and cute, and I loved them at first sight. I immediately set to work at creating my own, and I've got one finished. It's in black and white acrylic. I had it in mind for a gift pattern, but I couldn't think of a name for them. They look very much like papooses off, so I told my dad that. He thought I said "papusa," but they're papooses. This is a very simple pattern. Enjoy!

Materials:
US Size 10 straight needles

1 skein MC, 1 skein CC in worsted weight. If it gets real cold you might want to use a thicker yarn. (You probably don't need that much. I could knit them and a pair of gloves with a skein. I didn't measure though)
crochet hook
yarn needle

Gauge:
For these instructions, I had about 3.5 sts to an inch and about 6.5 rows to an inch.

Size:
These instructions are for a women's medium size foot (mine!). I tried on most of my friends, it fit without getting too big on a size 5, and it fit all the way up to size 10. It's easily modified.

Pattern:
CO 52 sts, or some other multiple of four, in MC.

Work in garter st. for 16 ridges or about 32 rows.

Change to CC and knit 1 row.

Work in P2, K2 ribbing for about 1.5 inches, or desired length.

Row 1: *P2, bind off 1 st, K1*, repeat between *s till last 6 sts, P2, K2, P2.

Row 2: *P2, cast on 1 st, K1*, repeat between *s till last 6 sts, P2, K2, P2.

K2, P2 one more row and then bind off.

Pick up all 52 sts on cast-on side of MC rectangle.

Using CC, knit one row.

Sew 1 short end of the papoose up, then sew up the two CC strips together for about a inch.

Crochet a lace using MC and lace it up!

Make another one.
