Pumpkin Hat

The finished pumpkin hat

Materials:
US#9 circular needles, & a set of Double Points
1 ball heavy worsted (or 2 strands of lighter yarn held together)

Gauge:
4 sts = 1 inch

Abbreviations:
tog = together

TBL = through back loop or loops

I cord = on a double point, knit 3 sts, do not turn work, but knit the 3 again, firmly pulling your yarn as you begin each row. Continue until desired length.

Pattern:
Cast on 63 stitches. *Knit 8 stitches and purl 1, and repeat from * across row. Place a marker to show beginning of the round. Work until about 5 inches for a baby, or 6 for a toddler size. If a larger size is wanted, go up a needle size, and work until 6 1/2 or 7 inches before you begin the
decreasing. For a Preemie size, use fingering wt yarn and size 3 or 4 double points (or a 12 " circular).

Then begin decreasing:

Row 1: *Knit 6 sts, k the next 2 tog, p 1, repeat from * around.

Row 2: Work even in pattern, knit the knit sts, and purl the purls.

Row 3: *Knit 2sts togTBL, knit 5, p1, repeat from * around.

Row 4: Same as Row 2

Row 5: *Knit 4 sts, k the next 2 tog, p 1, repeat from * around.

Row 6: Same as row 2

Row 7: *Knit 2 sts togTBL, knit 3, p 1, repeat from * around.

Row 8: *Knit 2 sts, k the next 2 tog, p 1, repeat from * around

Row 9: *Knit 2 sts togTBL, knit 1, p 1, repeat from * around.

Now use your green, or brown yarn for the stem:

Row 10: *Knit 2 tog, p 1, repeat from * around

Row 11: *Knit 2 sts togTBL all around

Work for 3 rows on these few stitches, then decrease 1 st every row until 3 remain. Work I cord until 3 to 4 inches in length, knit 2 tog, knit 1 and bind off. Cut your yarn and thread a tapestry needle. Put your needle down through stem, and attach to the inside. Fasten off the end of orange yarn also. Your hat is finished and ready to give!
