I was playing with the "fir pine" pattern from Barbara Walker but found that only the first half was practical for socks. So I guess you might consider them to be a "half fir pine" sock (well, half is better than none). It is a very easy pattern to work with only two rows and one of them is just knit.

I made these of chestnut colored Wool Ease but any light worsted type yarn would do nicely.

Materials:
1 ball of Wool Ease or approximately 100 gms of other yarn of this wt.
1 set of (5) double pointed needles - US size 6

Gauge:
5.3 sts per inch

Pattern:
Cast on 40 stitches, 10 on each needle.

Work K1, P1 ribbing for about 2 inches. Change to pattern stitch.

Pattern Stitch

Row 1: Knit around

Row 2: YO, K 3, slip a stitch, K 2 tog., pass slip stitch over, K 3, YO, K

1. Repeat across all needles.

Repeat these two rows until approximately 7 to 8 inches from beginning. Work 5 rows of stockinette stitch (k all sts.).

Begin heel flap: place 20 sts from needles 1 and 4 on one needle.

(WS) Sl 1, purl remaining stitches. Turn.

Sl 1, K1 across on right side.

Repeat these two rows for 16 rows total.

With right side facing you - Turn heel - Sl 1, k12, slip, knit and pass sl st over K st (skp). Turn.

sl 1, p6, p2 tog, turn

sl 1 k6, skp, turn

Repeat these last 2 rows until all sts are worked (8 sts on needle)

Gussets
Pick up 9 sts on left side. M1 in the loop between the first and second needle to prevent a hole. (M1 = Pick up the thread with your left needle and knit through back of loop to twist the stitch.) Knit across next 2 needles. MI in the loop between the third and fourth needle.

Pick up 9 sts on right side and k 4 sts from heel needle onto this needle. Place remaining 4 heel sts on left needle (1).

K 1 row around.

Decrease row: K to within 3 sts of end of 1st needle. SKP, K 1. Knit stitches on next two needles.

K1, k2tog, k remaining sts. on 4th needle.

Repeat these two rows three more times. You should now have 40 sts on needles.

Foot
Continue in stockinette st. as established until 1-1/2 " from desired length.

Toe
Decrease Row: K to within 3 sts of end of first needle, skp, k1.

K1, k2tog, k remaining sts on needle 2. Knit to within 3 sts of end of 3rd needle, skp, k1.

K1, k2tog, k remaining sts on needle 4.

K 2 rounds.

(Repeat decrease row, K 1 round), 3 times

Work decrease round each row until 4 sts remain on each needle. Place sts from needles 1,4 on one needle. Place sts from needles 2,3 on one needle and graft toe.
