Alex is a 17 pound, 5 month old AAB (absolutely adorable baby!) who sucks his thumb. One mitten has an opening so he can suck his thumb while wearing his mittens.
Materials:
Worsted weight yarn
Sets of size 3 and size 5 double points
Cast on 20 stitches. I use a long tail cast on over 2 needles.
Then I slip one needle out of the
first 10 stitches and the other one out of the second 10 stitches,
so they are now on 2 needles.
Hold together so the first and last stitches are touching. Then reverse
the first and last stitches
on the needles and K1, P1 the first round on the 2 needles.
Then for the next round I add the third and (perhaps) fourth needles. Rib K1 P1 for 1 inch.
Then switch to larger needles and knit, increasing 4 stitches in the first row (24 stitches).
Knit 2 inches above ribbing.
Decrease 4 stitches evenly (20 stitches).
Knit 3 rounds.
Decrease 5 stitches evenly (15 stitches).
Knit 3 rounds.
Decrease 7 stitches evenly (8 stitches).
Knit one round. Break yarn and run though stitches pull tightly.
On one mitten, at one inch above the ribbing, bind off 5 stitches at
the beginning of the round.
Cast on five stitches over them in the next round and continue as above.
When finished, slip stitch around the opening.
Attach yarn inside cuff of one mitten and crochet a chain long enough to run through the sleeves of his coat; attach the end to the cuff of the second mitten. This is inside the coat, so I think it is safe. If it bothers you, attach them to the coat sleeves instead with a very short chain.
