Here is my favourite family biscuit recipe. I make these biscuits during the holidays & always receive rave reviews. Enjoy!
2 C. sifted all purpose flour
4 tsp. baking powder, preferably Rumford's brand
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
2 tsp. sugar
1/2 C. shortening, I use butter
2/3 C. milk
Sift dry ingredients, blend shortening with dry ingredients using a pastry blender or a knife & fork. Add milk & mix well. Knead dough 2 minutes. Roll out dough between two sheets of wax paper & cut out biscuits. At this point you can store the cut out biscuit dough in the refrigerator 'til you are ready to bake them. Bake on a ungreased cookie sheet, at 450 degrees for 10-12 minutes. Watch closely, baking time will vary depending on the thickness of the biscuits. Serve warm from the oven.
Yields a dozen medium biscuits.
