This mitten pattern fits from ages 2 to 20 Sizes: child 2-4 (child 6-8, child 10-12, adult small, adult med, adult large)
Materials:
Bulky weight yarn (amount depends on the size you're knitting)
Needles 1 set size 6 (U.S.)
1 set size 10 (U.S.)
Gauge:
7 stitches and 10 rows in Stocking Stitch on size 10 needles = 2 in
(5cm)
Mitten (right and left):
With smaller needles cast on loosely 20(24,28,30,34,36) sts, dividing
onto 3 needles, mark beginning of round, join work and rib (k1,p1) for
2-1/2 (3,3-1/2,4,4-1/2,5)inches
Next: Change to larger needles and work st st (knit all rounds) for 2(3,3,4,4,4) rounds.
Next: Increase for thumb gussett as follows, making each increase by
K into st. below next st.
on needle, then K into st. on needle
Round 1: K1,inc,1st.in next st., K1(1,1,3,3,3),inc 1st.in next st., put marker on needle,K to end
Round 2: K
Round 3: K1,inc.1 st.in next st, K to within 1 st of marker, inc.1st.,K to end
Next: Repeat rounds 2 and 3 until there are 10(12,12,14,14,16)sts before marker.
Next: K2 (3,3,3,4,4) rounds
Next rnd: K1,sl8(10,10,12,12,14)sts onto holder for thumb,pick up and K 1 st at each side of thumb base (2 sts.inc),K to end, then K2 sts from beginning of round onto 3rd needle.
Next: Cont in St.st for 1-1/2(2,2-1/2,3,3,3)in., or until mitten measures

To shape top
Round 1: *Sl1, K1, psso., K6(8,10,10,12,13), K2tog., put marker on needle.
Repeat from * once
(4 st dec)
Round 2: K
Round 3: *Sl1, K1, psso, K to within 2 sts of marker, K2tog., Rpt. from *
Next: Rpt. rounds 2 and 3 until 8(8,8,8,8,10)sts remain. Break off yarn
leaving 10 inches length
for grafting
Divide sts on 2 needles and graft
Thumb:
Slip thumb sts. from holder and divide onto 3 needles. Put about 10
inches end of yarn inside
thumb hole. then work St. St for 1-1/4(1-1/2, 2, 2-1/4, 2-1/2, 3)in
or desired length.
Next rnd: K2 tog to end
Break off yarn leaving 10 inches length. Thread yarn through needle
and pass through remaining
stitches and secure/. Turn mitten inside out. Thread needle with yarn
at base of thumb and stitch to close any gaps.
