Pattern:
Starting at top of stocking, cast on 42 sts, using red.

Switch to white and work 3 inches in stockinette st in white. On last row, increase evenly spaced to 47 sts.

Foot:
Divide for bottom and instep: place 12 sts on each side of piece
on holder or extra needle. Remaining 23 sts are used for instep.
Instep:
Using green and white mosaic pattern as follows, work instep for
4 inches:
Row 1: w/green, k 2, *sl 1, k 1, repeat to last 2 sts, k 2
Row 2: w/green, repeat the preceding row, knitting the k sts and slipping the slip sts with yarn in front
Row 3: w/white, knit
Row 4: w/white, knit
Repeating these four rows for instep pattern, work for 4 inches, ending with a row 4 and decreasing 1 st on this row. Place these sts on holder.
Heel:
Take up the 24 bottom stitches, with the center back in the
middle. Using red, knit one row. Start back of heel:
Row 1: sl 1, purl across
Row 2: sl 1, k 1 across
Repeat these two rows for 2 1/2 inches.
Turn Heel:
Row 1: right side facing, k 13, ssk, k 1, turn
Row 2: sl 1, p 3, p 2 tog, p 1, turn
Row 3: sl 1, k 4, ssk, k 1, turn
Row 4: sl 1, p 5, p 2 tog, p 1, turn
Repeat Rows 3 and 4, having 1 more st each time before the decrease, until all sts have been worked, ending with a purl row (14 sts).
Cut yarn and reattach at right of heel piece. Pick up 10 sts along side of heel, k 14 sts of heel, pick up 10 sts along other side of heel (34 sts).
Work instep as follows:
Row 1: purl
Row 2: k 1, ssk, k to last 3 sts, k 2 tog, k 1
Repeat these two rows until 22 sts remain. work straight, using red, until bottom piece measures same length as instep.
Foot:
Using double pointed needles, work across bottom and top, dividing
sts onto three needles and placing markers at each of the two sides. Join
and work foot in rounds, in red, until foot
measures 5 to 6 inches.
Toe:
Work as follows:
Round 1 knit across to 2 sts before first marker, k 2 tog, slip marker, ssk, repeat once to finish round
Round 2: knit around
Repeat these two rounds until 16 sts remain (8 on each half of sock). Weave these together to complete toe.
Sew all seams. The white band following the ribbing can be used
to duplicate stitch a name if desired or for other decoration.
