This six-pointed star is entirely lacy inside.
It's worked in a simple repetitive stitch pattern.
Materials:
1 ball Bernat Handicrafter (or soft worsted weight cotton of your choice)
Set of four US size 7 double-pointed needles; US size 7 16" circular
needle
Optional: US size 7 24" circular needle
(Or whatever size needles make a fabric you like)
Size:
about 12" diameter from point to point, about 10" from valley to valley
Notes:
Repeat instruction on each needle.
All even-numbered rounds are knitted; don't forget to knit them (like
I did)!
At about rnd 13, move to 16" circular needle.
At about rnd 19, move to 24" circular needle (if you have one).
Cast on 9 sts.
Place 3 sts on three needles and work with the fourth needle.
Rnd 1: Yo, k1 (18 sts).
Rnd 2 and all even rounds: Knit.
Rnd 3: K1, (k1, p1, k1) in next st, k1.
Rnd 5: Ssk, yo, (k1, p1, k1) in nxt st, yo, k2tog.
Rnd 7: Ssk, yo, k1, (k1, p1, k1) in nxt st, k1, yo, k2tog.
Rnd 9: (Ssk, yo) 2 times, (k1, p1, k1) in nxt st, (yo, k2tog) 2 times.

2 times.
Rnd 13: (Ssk, yo) 3 times, (k1, p1, k1) in nxt st, (yo, k2tog) 3 times.
Rnd 15: (Ssk, yo) 3 times, k1, (k1, p1, k1) in nxt st, k1 (yo, k2tog)

Rnd 27: Purl.
Cast off loosely.
Notes from Mary Bowman-Kruhm:
To help less experienced knitters, here are the counts at ends of rows.
Once you see pattern develop (lovely lace that ends up as a star or
flower), you don't need the count.
End of--
row 3: 10 sts each needle=30 sts
row 5: 14 sts each needle=42 sts
row 7: 18 sts each needle=54 sts
row 9: 22 sts each needle=66 sts
row 11: 26 sts each needle=78 sts
Obviously each pattern repeat adds 2 sts; i.e., 4/needle and 12/round.
When I switched to a circular needle, I put marker to show beginning
of round and two markers in another color where needles would have divided
work. By this time you can see the pattern and quickly count number of
sts in a pattern repeat.
