I unvented this pattern. You get the chance to swatch different stitches while you create, and it can be as easy or as difficult, as lacy or as "manly" as you like. It is also knit in the round and from the centre out so you can knit until you run out of yarn (or stitches to use).
I used worsted weight acrylic stuff and 4.5mm needles, but use what you have and want to. You could even change the needles you work with to experiment with changes in tension.
Basic Pattern:
Cast on eight stitches on 5 dps (to start with).
Knit one round.
Increase into every stitch in next round (16sts).
*Knit one round
Yarn over after the first stitch on every needle and before the last
stitch on every needle. (ie 8 times in total in round)*
Repeat last two rows until you almost run out of wool.
Finish in your preferred method.
Applied garter stitch stripe, crochet edging, loose cast off are some suggestions.
Sampler stitches:
So you don't get bored, at some stage, purl two rows then knit two rows
(keeping yarn over increases every second row). Then, choose a stitch
pattern, centre it on each of the four "panels" and do it for as long as
you like. Add in the extra stiches as soon as there is enough for a complete
pattern
repeat.
Then knit two rows, purl two rows and knit two rows before trying another stitch pattern.
For mine, I tried moss stitch, then tiny cables, then a stripe of feather and fan, then a lace pattern. I'm still going.
That's it!
