Size:
Fits average woman's head (20-22 inch circumference)
Materials:
Any worsted weight yarn will do. This doesn't take a large amount of yarn, far
less than a hank. I used off white for the ribbing, and heather green
for the patterned portion.
Roving
4mm DP needles
Gauge:
17-20 st to 4 inches.
Using waste yarn, provisionally cast on 100 st.
Change to project yarn and knit in 2x2 rib for 1.5 inches, increasing
5 st evenly across last round.
Knit 2 rounds even.
Begin thrum pattern:
*Row 1: Knit a thrum into every third st, beginning with the
first st on needle 1.
Row 2: Knit, ensuring you knit into the BACK of every thrummed st.
Rows 3 & 4: Knit
Repeat from row 1.
Work this for 3 inches (about 5 pattern repeats), decreasing 5 st evenly
across last row.
Work 2x2 rib for 1.5 inches. Do not cast off.
Making Up:
Kitchener (graft) the edges
of the ribbing together. This will enclose the thrums, and also give
a lot of stretch to the headband. Before kitchenering, I pulled on
the tails of the thrums, to set them in tight, (just in case). This also
evened them out.
