Materials:
Size 7 needles (circulars are best I think)
Cotton yarn - one skein
Pattern:
Cast on 37 stitches.
Knit four rows.
Keep three stitches each side in garter stitch.
Rows 1 and 3 (right side) - K1, *K2tog, yf, k1, yf, sl1, k1, psso, k3;
repeat from *to last 6 stitches; k2tog, yf, k1, yf, sl1, k1, psso, k1.
Rows 2 and 4 - P3, *sl1 purlwise, p7; repeat from * to last 4 stitches;
sl1 purlwise, p3.
Rows 5 and 7 - K5, *k2tog, yf, k1, yf, sl1, k1, psso, k3; repeat from
* to last 2 stitches; k2.
Rows 6 and 8 - P7, *sl1 purlwise, p7; repeat from * to end.
Repeat these 8 rows five times.
Knit four rows.
Bind off loosely.
This cloth is about 8 inches square, you can increase the stitches or use larger needles if you want it bigger. I like this size for dishes, gets inside a glass really well.
This may be my favorite yet (or do I say that every time?). This pattern
stitch is from Volume 2 of The Harmony Guides, page 49. It is a multiple
of 8 + 7 stitches if you want it wider. It is lacy yet not too open so
I think it will still make a good cloth. It may look a little hard at first,
but
once you get knitting, the pattern is easy to do. I do suggest sort
of pulling the stitches down (to tighten them in the cloth - does that
make sense?) as you knit across each row. Ask me if you have any other
