1960's Norma's Poncho Update 2000


 
Materials:
200-250 grams of main shade (depends what you choose)
150 grams (approx) each of 2 contrast colours all in DK weight (Aran weight would be OK too)
Needles : prob size 5 US (go up or down one size to suit your yarn)

Gauge:
30 rows and 20 stitches to 4" (don't sweat it if it ain't exact, this thing is knitted in sections so you can adjust)

Abbreviations:
pm = place marker
yo = yarn over
mc = main colour

Section:
Cast on 117 stitches and knit 5 rows (for garter edging)

Pattern row 1: with MC- K1, K2tog, K55, yo, K1, pm, yo, K55, K2tog tbl, K1

2nd and all alternate rows: Purl

Rep rows 1 and 2, 5 times more (12 rows worked)

Row 13: Join in 1st contrast and work K1, K3tog, K to centre st, yo, K1, yo, K to last 4 sts, sl1 K2 tog, psso, K1 (115 sts)

Row 15: Rep row 13

Row 17: K1, K2tog, K to centre st, yo, K1, yo, K to last 3 sts, K2 tog tbl, K1

Rows 19 to 24: as rows 13-18 (Do not change colour on the 13th row this time)

Row 25: Join in 2nd contrast and work rows 25-36 the same as you did rows 13-18, only twice. By now you should have 101 sts left

Row 37: Change to MC and work rows 37-48 same as rows 13-18 twice again, leaving you with 93 sts.

Keep on working 12 rows of each colour and decreasing as before till you are left with 21 sts.

You should be back to MC again by now and you can shape the the neck as follows:

K7, turn, P back,
K4, turn, P back,
K across all sts,
P7 turn, K back,
P4 turn, K back,
P2, P2 tog, (P3, P2 tog) to last 2 sts P2.
Leave remaining 17 sts on holder

MAKE 5 more sections the same

To finish:
Block each piece to same size and join seams.

Polo-neck Collar
With right side facing pick up the stitches from each holder (102 total) and work with MC in K2 P2 rib for 7", cast off loosly and join collar seam. Fold collar over.
