Really Warm Mitts

These mitts are for a hand length of 13 cm (for my 10 yo grand-daughter) if you want to make them larger, add stitches in multiples of 4; for smaller hands: decrease in multiples of 4 and shorten the length. If anyone has any questions, E-mail Me and I'll try to answer your questions

Materials:
Needles: 3.75mm (set of 5)
Yarn: 1-50g balls, (105 m) Schachenmayr Nomotta Shetland Style 55% Wool 45% Acrylic

Gauge:
5 1/2 sts per inch

Pattern:
Cast on 32 sts (8-8-8-8), join, taking care not to twist the stitches, and place marker at beginning of round - this is the center of the back of the mitt.
Knit 3 rounds, purl 3 rounds 5 times (this is a ridged cuff - great for keeping the snow out of sleeves)
Knit 10 rounds of k2 p2 rib (this snugs up on the wrist)

Increase 4 stitches evenly on next round (k4, m1, k4 on each needle) 36 stitches. Here is where you could start a stitch pattern of your choice.

Knit 10 rounds and then mark for thumb:
Marking for thumb (right mitt):
Knit needle 1, on needle 2 and using contrasting waste yarn, k6; slip these 6 stitches back to the left needle and knit them again using main yarn; continue knitting around for a total length of 4 inches (measure from beginning of stockinette) or length required to top of little finger.

Marking for thumb (left mitt):
Knit needle 1 and needle 2, on needle 3 knit 3 and using contrasting waste yarn, k6; slip these 6 stitches back to the left needle and knit them again using main yarn; continue knitting around for a total length of 4 inches (measure from beginning of stockinette) or length required to top of little finger.

Decrease for tip:
Round 1:
needle 1: knit to within 3 stitches of the end of needle; k2tog, k1
needle 2: k1, ssk;
needle 3: knit to within 3 stitches of the end of needle, K2tog, k1
needle 4: K1, ssk

Round 2: Knit (no decreases)

Knit rounds 1 & 2 until 3 stitches remain on each needle, slip stitches onto 2 needles and graft, or turn the mitt inside out and do a 3-needle bind off on the remaining stitches.
If you prefer a more rounded tip, at forefinger length k2tog on first round and knit second round until 8 stitches remain in total, cut yarn, thread tail through remaining stitches, pull tight and weave in end.

Thumb: Carefully remove waste yarn and pick up 11 stitches, increase one at each corner of the slit by m1 (13 stitches) divide onto 3 needles (4-5-4). Knit to length of thumb and decrease stitches by k2tog until 4 sts remain, cut yarn, thread tail through remaining stitches, pull tight and weave in end.

Make another one.
